A young Guernsey side learned a few harsh lessons on Wednesday night as champions elect Farnham Town ran riot at the Memorial Ground.

The Green Lions were always going to be up against it against the free-spending side that have a squad far too good for this level, who ruthlessly punished mistakes and got a little bit of luck among their goals as well. But GFC’s work rate could not be faulted.

The hosts started as they meant to go on with a trio of chances in the third minute as Sam De St Croix had two efforts cleared off the line but Ben Solway and Tom Dodds respectively before Owen Dean’s header was held by Josh Addison.

Jordan Gallagher got the first of four, to add to his collection against Guernsey over the last to years, in the 14th minute as he cut in from the left and curled into the far top corner via the post.

Sam De St Croix slotted home a rebound as the Guernsey lost possession on the edge of their own box and Great Evans’s initial shot was saved.

It was the first of two goals in five minutes as Gallagher pounced on a loose ball spilled by rounded Addison him to tap home after Harry Cooksley’s initial effort had been saved, and the forward completed his hat-trick before half-time as he turned home from Evans’s pass.

De St Croix should have made it five before half-time but skied the ball from almost under the bar. Gallagher completed his night’s contribution just five minutes into the second half as he pounced on a loose ball and picked out the top corner.

The Sarnians’ night was summed up by the sixth on 75 minutes as a clearance cannoned of De St Croix and the ball looped off him and over Addison, with Kai Tanner drilling into the bottom corner from outside the box on 79 minutes to complete the scoring.

At least the Sarnians managed to avoid matching their biggest ever defeat of 8-0, as the hosts did threaten to add more before the end.

This will be one that Tony Vance will file away very quickly – it was heartening to see hhim back in the dugout after a few months recovering from a nasty fall – as these aren’t the games that define your fate, and the Green Lions will have their eye on a much more favourable run towards the end of the campaign.

There were a couple of results that went against Guernsey on Tuesday night as Ashford Town and Sutton Common Rovers both won. The other Isthmian South Central midweek results were as follows: Badshot Lea 0-2 Hanworth Villa, Binfield 0-4 Hartley Wintney, Hayes & Yeading United 2-3 Uxbridge, Horndean 0-2 Sutton Common Rovers, Kingstonian 2-0 Southall, Raynes Park Vale 1-3 Ashford Town.
