Guernsey survival hopes suffered a major blow on Saturday afternoon as they ended up on the wrong side of a six pointer due to yet another last-gasp goal.
South Park’s 99th-minute winner has left the Green Lions requiring snookers as they now cannot overtake them with their game in hand. Ashford Town’s win on Friday night has also thrown another spanner in the works.
GFC have dropped 15 points this season due to conceding goals in the 85th minute or later and it is what has hamstrung them from a what should be a comfortable midtable position.
But instead Tony Vance’s side are in a situation where every game really counts now, and they will require a few favours.
The first four goals came within a space of 11 minutes in a frantic first half.
The hosts had already rattled the crossbar with a header by the time Jack Tucker sent a free-kick into the top corner to put the Sparks in front midway through the half.
But within five minutes the Green Lions were level as Charlton Gauvain’s fancy footwork drew a foul and the returning Ross Allen fired the penalty home confidently.
Within three minutes the Sarnians had turned it around as Fin du Port fizzed in a cross from the right for Gauvain to meet and plant a bullet header past Danny Bracken.
But it was not a lead Guernsey could hold as four minutes later as Craig McGee split the away defence with a through ball and George Vincent finished first time to level.
Josh Addison denied Shamal Edwards in injury time and it was all to play for in the second half.
The second period grew increasingly scrappy as the nerves crept in on both sides. Du Port made a crucial challenge to deny Edwards with less than five minutes left but the game was about to enter a period of lengthy injury time.
We were beyond the seven minutes initially added on when the hosts won a free-kick just outside the Guernsey box. The initial effort was blocked but the Green Lions couldn’t clear their lions as South Park did all they could to keep the chance alive. It fell to Dan Moody who swept the ball into the corner and spark pandemonium from the hosts and deliver a catastrophic blow to GFC’s survival hosts.
Guernsey are now 21st in the table. Saturday’s other Isthmian South Central results were as follows: Ascot United 1-5 Farnham Town, Badshot Lea 0-4 Leatherhead, Hartley Wintney 0-1 Raynes Park Vale, Hayes & Yeading United 2-1 Metropolitan Police, Kingstonian 0-1 Hanworth Villa, Southall 4-3 Horndean, Sutton Common Rovers 1-2 Moneyfields, Uxbridge 2-4 Rayners Lane, Westfield 2-0 Harrow Borough.
