Guernsey FC Women are Champions!

The Green Lionesses got the point they needed to mathematically confirmed they couldn’t be caught in the JFA Women’s Combination, confirming the league title that they had already won via the head-to-head rule.

But Rozel Rovers were party poopers, digging in to snatch a point in injury time to become the first team to take points of the Sarnians.

But GFCW made up for it later in the afternoon, making it a title procession with an 8-0 win over Jersey Wanderers, with an outstanding five-goal haul for Gracia van Zutphen (only Ross Allen has done that for Guernsey FC before).

Read on for the match reports.

GUERNSEY          1 (Bougourd 27’)
ROZEL ROVERS  1 (Le Page 90+1’)

Guernsey were in control for much of the game, but didn’t convert any of their openings so the risk was always there on the break for the visitors, and they got their reward by punishing a defensive mistake to get their point.

Ella Doherty headed wide for Rozel in the first chance of the game but Guernsey soon asserted their dominance. Rozel keeper Tayah Vasse misjudged a ball from Scarlett Gallagher to the far post which was pounced on by Chloe Ingrouille, but Ana Melim bailed her keeper out by clearing off the line before Ingrouille could add the final touch.

Debutant Jess Frampton would have a fine game form both an attacking and defensive perspective. Her first eye-catching moment was her footwork to get herself into the box and tee up Gallagher at the far post, but the shot looped up onto the post.

Captain Candice Bougourd had a couple of earlier sighters with a free-kick and a shot from outside the box (the latter after fancy footwork by Ingrouille) and the skipper put her side in front after 26 minutes, with her free-kick from 25 yards bouncing in off the far post.

Vasse saved a looping effort from Frampton and Aimee Ogier’s looper dropped over before the half was out, but the game stepped up a notch in the second half.

Kayleigh Marquis made her first save of the afternoon less than five minutes in as she beat away Doherty’s shot. Vasse saved again from Frampton then scrambled across her goal to push wide after Codie drove down the left and cut into the area.

Ogier, Donna Gallienne, Le Flem and Frampton were all off target as they failed to capitalise on their dominance, and they were nearly punished just after the hour as sloppy play at the back led to a chance for Holly Muirhead but her shot was straight at Marquis.

Vasse held again from Frampton, who then drove down the left, rolled her marker and teed up Gracia van Zutphen to dig out a shot, but Vasse held.

It was then Gallienne’s turn to be foiled by Vasse after pouncing on a poor clearance on the edge of the box. Vasse couldn’t hold the shot but there was no-one to turn in the rebound.

Le Lacheur lifted a shot over in the 89th minute when following up a corner before the Green Lionesses profligacy came back to haunt them.

The Sarnians were a little too casual at the back, and Emily Le Page pounced on the loose ball, ran clear into the box and slotted under Marquis to spark a wild celebration at being the first team to get a result against the Green Lionesses.

There was still time for one more effort from Le Flem form the angle, but Vasse held to preserve Rozel’s point.

GUERNSEY                      8 (van Zutphen 5, Staples, Ingrouille, Hedley)
JERSEY WANDERERS   0

The Green Lionesses quickly got over the disappointment of their late concession against Rozel to brush aside Jersey Wanderers with ease.

Gracia van Zutphen had a bace with little more than 10 minutes on the clock, then a series of tidy finishes to bag an additional hat-trick in just seven minutes around the midway point of the second half took her and her team’s total to five and catapulted her up to joint third in the all-time scorers list for the women’s team.

Jessie Staples poked home from a corner to make it six on 82 minutes with her first goal for the club, Chloe Ingrouille finished off a great run with a goal of her own and Calleigh Hedley made sure she had her say on the day by scoring with virtually the final kick of the game.
