Guernsey FC Women's 11-0 sign-off over Sports Club of Jersey on Saturday took on a special meaning for one family.
Player-coach Katie Robert, who made two appearances for the Green Lionesses last season but was yet to take to the field this season, made an appearance from the bench in the second half, lobbing in her first goal for the club in the process to make it 9-0.
But she had another motive for wanting to play for what she has said was for the last time. Her daughter is Green Lioness Mollie Watson, who had started the game but had come off. As it was rolling subs, Watson returned to the field late on, meaning that mother and daughter got to play together for the Green Lionsesses. We've had uncles and nephews in the past, and sons following in their fathers' footsteps, but this is the first instance of a parent-child combination in a Guernsey FC game.
"Mollie was too young to play last season when I played a couple of games, so once we knew the league was under wraps two weeks ago, we thought it would be a nice moment to finish the season," said Katie. "We wanted to make history by being the first parent and child to play for the club and it was a special family moment that we'll always remember.
"I'll keep reminding her that I'm level on goals with her now (Mollie scored against Sports Club earlier in the season, but she'll go on for many more years and I'm sure she'll grab a few more."
Katie used the opportunity to confirm that she was now retiring from playing, and she was given a guard of honour by the squad at the end.
"It was really good to win the game but more importantly to give minutes to a lot of players who have not featured as much this season. It was good for them to get involved."
The Green Lionsesses also said goodbye to defender Heather Smith on Saturday, as she is set to return to her native New Zealand. She made seven appearances across two seasons.
GFCW manager Anna Gauvain said: "It's been a pleasure to have Heather on the team. She is a lovely character and a great footballer. I hope she has fallen back in love with the game and continues to play back home in New Zealand. The coaches and players wish her the best of luck for the future."
