Saturday's postponement of our game against Binfield means the Footes Lane faithful is denied the chance to say a proper goodbye to Madeiran playmaker Carlos Canha, who is leaving the island after four years.

Having helped Rovers to a successful defence of their maiden Priaulx League title in 2017-18, Carlos made the step up to UK non-league football and was a key player in the Green Lions' attack in 2018-19 and 2019-20 (until the season was curtailed due to Covid-19 in February 2020). The pandemic prevented him getting another season of performances on his belt but he returned to the side in the last few weeks and played a starring role in GFC's 6-2 over Staines Town last weekend.

Carlos leaves GFC having scored eight goals in 60 appearances. He says he will miss the club tremendously.

"When I look back on my time at Guernsey FC, I can say it’s been amazing, truly amazing, he said". It’s probably the highest level of football I’ve ever played at.

"Everything about playing for GFC makes me want to keep coming to training and playing, because it’s something that makes me feel alive. Every single weekend is a different challenge, and you just want to be there to help the team and be a part of the experience, and I will miss it. I’ll miss Guernsey, I’ll miss Guernsey FC, I’ll miss everyone for sure.

"As I’m leaving now, I would say to the team that I hope they keep doing the work they’ve been doing, because they’ve all been working so hard. I hope everything is going to go well with GFC. I do feel that it is going to go well because having seen the way we’re training, and the way they coach us, I feel they have everything they need to keep fighting for their goals."

Look out for our other story where a few of Carlos GFC teammates and coaches say a few words of thanks to Carlos.
