ST PETER 0
GUERNSEY 3 (Le Flem 8'; Leech 45+1'; Bougourd 72')
Guernsey FC Women have claimed silverware in their first season after coasting to a 3-0 win over St Peter at Springfield in Jersey on Sunday.
It marks an encouraging first season for the Green Lionesses under Anna Gauvain, in which they have competed in three cup competitions.
It was a fully deserved victory, the margin of which could have been far greater if not for a string of excellent saves by Catherine Perry-Overbury.
The visitors started like a freight train and could have been ahead within five minutes as Calleigh Hedley was brought down by Perry-Overbury. But the St Peter stopper made amends with a double save to deny the Guernsey number nine, first going down to her left to parry, then brilliantly sticking out a leg to keep out Hedley's follow-up from a couple of yards out.
However, Guernsey had the ball in the net just three minutes later for the opener, with Hedley causing problems again as she ran in behind. Perry-Overbury denied her again but the loose ball rolled into the path of Codie Le Flem to stroke into the empty net from the edge of the box, recementing her place as the team's leading scorer.
St Peter threatened an equaliser within minutes as 18 flashed a header wide from a corner, but the Sarnians then almost doubled their lead a minute later as Hedley chased yet another ball over the top and evaded Perry-Overbury, but her lofted shot struck the crossbar.
Hedley was inches away from turning home a ball across goal by Le Flem, and the running personal battle between Hedley and Perry-Overbury continued as the Caesarean stopper blocked from the angle as Hedley got in behind again, then showed strong hands to beat away the Sarnian striker's rising drive.
Guernsey picked the perfect time to increase their lead, making it two in first-half stoppage time. Perry-Overbury had initially saved well as captain Candice Bougourd tried to catch her out with a lob from range. From the resulting corner, substitute Adrienne Leech finished at the near post from almost on the line, her first goal for the club.
The visitors nearly made it three early in the second half, with Leech this time the beneficiary of a ball in behind. But Perry-Overbury, definitely her side's star player on the day, narrowed the angle and stuck out a leg to block, with the ball bouncing just wide of the far post.
Hedley couldn't quite keep her header on target from Bougourd's corner midway through the second half, but the Guernsey skipper put the result beyond doubt on 72 minutes as she sent looping volley into the corner after Donna Gallienne's free-kick had been headed out to the edge of the box.
The 10 minutes of injury time was worth the wait for the Green Lionesses to lift the Colin Welsh trophy.
Congratulations to the team on a fantastic debut season.
