A former Oxford United youth team captain, 'Gus' moved to Guernsey a few years before the formation of GFC and quickly established himself as one of the most accomplished players in the local scene as a tidy, selfless player with a great engine.
He spent three years at Oxford United as a youth/reserve team player before a nasty injury put an untimely halt to his hopes of a professional career.
Also a former British Universities Captain, Gus can operate effectively in a number of positions, mainly being used as a midfield anchor but is also comfortable at right-back and centre-back. This was proved at the International Island Games tournament in the Isle of Wight, whereby he played in every single game, helping Guernsey and himself to a Silver medal. He also appeared in the successful gold-medal winning squad in Jersey in 2015.
Persistent injuries have seen Mackay having disrupted runs in the team. Stepped away from playing in early 2018 and focused on coaching, enjoying great success in charge of the Guernsey U21 squad. Started training again with the Green Lions in the summer of 2019, and his experience could be key in a young squad.
