Sam Murray marked his century appearance with the winning goal as Guernsey overcame tricky conditions to grind out a win at Seaford Town on Tuesday night and make it two wins from two.
The first half was a little scrappy on a poor surface and the Green Lions struggled to get any rhythm.
Seb Sheppard had to be alert to save well from Max Howell, who was found in space just outside the box. That came shortly after Murray’s improvised flick was held by Jack Webb.
The Sarnians improved and had a flurry of half-chances towards the end of the half, including one from Callum Le Lacheur that whistled just wide of the post at the end of the scramble that also saw Sam Murray, Ross Allen and Seb Vance have a go.
Murray fired just over the bar after getting on the end of a great delivery from Brandon Wallace, while Allen also came close. Charlton Gauvain also tried his luck from distance but was well off target.
Like against Wick, Murray got there in the end with a well taken finish through goalkeeper Jack Webb’s legs after being put through one on one by Tom Vaudin, giving the Sarnians a vital lead with little over a quarter of an hour remaining, to mark his 100th appearance in the best way possible.
The Green Lions ended the game three players to the good as the two reckless challenges by Josh Bradley and then Tom Shelley on substitute Frazer Maginnis and Charlton Gauvain respectively within five minutes of each other, before their captain Matt Simpson was sinbinned with too little time left to come back on.
Substitute Will Fazakerley nearly made it two late on but was denied by a good save. The visitors didn’t really have enough time to take advantage of their numerical advantage and had to settle for one, but you can’t ask for much more than three points and a clean sheet away from home at this stage of the season. They are one of only five teams to have taken maximum points from their first two fixtures.
Guernsey are well and truly off and running. They have Saturday off due to the FA Cup but can look forward to another midweek trip on Monday, to AFC Varndeanians.
The other midweek Southern Combination Premier Division results were as follows: AFC Varndeanians 2-3 Bexhill United, Forest Row 0-1 Easebourne United, Midhurst & Easebourne 0-4 Haywards Heath Town, Crawley Down Gatwick 2-2 Newhaven, Little Common 0-2 Shoreham, Roffey 3-0 Lancing, Peacehaven & Telscombe 5-1 Lingfield, Wick 1-2 Horsham YM Steyning Town 1-1 Pagham.
