Guernsey ran out 4-1 winners over Ramsgate to record their first victory at the Southwood Stadium at the lucky number seventh attempt.

Ross Allen opened the scoring in the 21st minute, firing through a congested penalty area into the bottom corner via a deflection for his fourth goal in five games.

Guernsey’s advantage lasted just seven minutes, as Rory Smith got on the end of a cross and looped a header over goalkeeper Callum Stanton to restore parity.

However, the visitors retook the lead before half-time courtesy of an impressive long-range strike from defender Frank Tobin. Guernsey have scored some absolute stunners already this season, and this one was another to add to the list. Having received the ball around 30 yards out and in plenty of space, he took aim from long range and found the top-right corner with a powerful drive that left Ramsgate ‘keeper William Godmon with no chance – right in the postage stamp.

Guernsey continued to impress after the break, extending their lead through Madeiran playmaker Carlos Canha in the 53rd minute. He took advantage as two home defenders let the ball bounce over them, nipping onto it and lobbing the ball over Godmon’s head to notch his first goal of the season.

Before the hour mark, the Green Lions rounded off the scoring with a fourth. Having collected Thomas Dodds’ useful defensive header, Canha did well to drive forward through the middle of the pitch under pressure and feed Liam Mahon down the right. Mahon hit a low cross to the near post, with Will Fazakerley getting there first to prod in for 4-1.

The visitors tried to extend their lead in the closing stages, with youngster Alex Scott denied by some good defending and Liam Mahon firing a free-kick just wide, but what they had was enough to secure back-to-back away wins for the first time since beating Sevenoaks Town (2-0, Nov 28th) and VCD Athletic (8th Dec) consecutively last season.

A fantastic victory sends the Green Lions up into the top half of Isthmian South East with two wins and two draws making up most of their first five games, all of which have taken place away from home. It means they are level with Tuesday’s opponents, Haywards Heath Town, as the Green Lions make yet another away trip.
