Guernsey ended their wretched away losing streak in the most unlikely of circumstances as Jack Domaille’s late set-piece brace snatched a point at league leaders Tooting & Mitcham United.

Domaille netted twice in the final quarter-hour in a game that looked lost after the hosts had dominated and the Sarnians were forced to do plenty of defending.

The Green Lions had suffered 13 straight league defeats away from home before Domaille’s double and hopefully this result sees the Greens turn the corner.

It was an unlikely looking result based on the first half, where it was often a case of attack versus defence.

The Terrors showed early intent within a minute as Eddie Dines smashed over. Danny Bassett also fired narrowly over after GFC goalkeeping debutant Jordan Kelly had tipped a low shot wide from Ollie Bennett.

Kelly was called upon twice further in the next few minutes as he saved from Claudio Hoban and Bennett – the second a great block – before Bassett dragged wide for the Terrors in their best chance of the game so far.

The early warnings were a sign of things to come from the Terrors as they took the lead – albeit in fortunate circumstances. Taurean Roberts’ cross from the left wing took a wicked deflection that diverted the ball cruelly out of reach of Kelly’s reach into the far corner.

Kelly held again as Roberts cut in and curled towards the far post before Guernsey’s first half chance on goal. A good move saw early substitute Jacob Fallaize – on for the injured Tom De La Mare – tee up Dom Heaume, but the latter’s shot was deflected wide for a corner.

The Green Lions’ first shot on target came from Ross Allen – who was making his 200th appearance – but the number 10s’ free-kick was parried wide by Matt Pierson.

Roberts continued to threaten for the hosts and hit the base of the post after cutting in from the left on 37 minutes. Minutes later, he curled narrowly wide.

Allen threatened the Terrors’ goal right at the end of the half but his first touch let him down and a last-ditch challenge meant it was only a corner.

It was more of the same in the second half as it looked like the Green Lions were set a challenge of keeping the score respectable. Kelly made a strong save from Bassett before a vital deflection sent Dines’ effort well over.

Just after the hour mark the Terrors looked like they had put the game to bed as they notched a second. A cross from the right byline dropped towards the far side of the area and Billy Dunn was perfectly placed to unleash an unstoppable volley that was still rising as it hit the roof of the net.

It looked like the Green Lions were set for another evening of damage limitation and Kelly was forced to dive left and tip wide from Roberts. The young goalkeeper was alert again to deny a low shot from Jordan Wilson.

It looked like the Sarnians were set to extend their losing record on the road, but suddenly hopes were rekindled as Jack Domaille controlled Ryan-Zico Black’s free-kick and found the net at the near post to halve the deficit.

Suddenly it was game on, but the Green Lions still had to be alert as a double-goal-line clearance – first from Matt Price’s header then Bashiru Alimi’s rebound – from a corner kept the score at 2-1. Josh Steel and Tom Dodds were the heroes on the line.

It was to prove pivotal as the visitors earned a late free-kick. Allen’s effort was saved by Pierson but the stopper parried it back into the danger area and Domaille was closest to loop a header in for his second goal and a vital equaliser.

The ecstasy of a last-ditch leveller was nearly wiped out as a Tooting cross from the right deflected off Alex Le Prevost. But to Sarnian relief, if struck the crossbar and was cleared.

But that was the last action and the Green Lions put to bed their wretched run of 13 straight league defeats away from home and ensured a first point on the road since December 2015.
