Guernsey had a taste of their own medicine almost a year to the day since their own smash and grab at Sutton Common Rovers, as they had three points turn into zero deep into stoppage time at Church Road on Saturday.
The Green Lions stole all three points with the last kick of the game at the start of September thanks to Ross Allen, and this time Tony Vance’s side were leading deep into stoppage time thanks to Charlton Gauvain’s early header and heroics by Josh Addison to save a first-half penalty.
But the Sarnians didn’t take their opportunities to finish off their hosts and were suckerpunched in the 95th and 97th minutes to throw away the opportunities of recording a steadier start to the season.
It also comes less than a year after Guernsey conceded two stoppage-time goals to drop points against Merstham.
GFC couldn’t have asked for a better start as Sam Murray whipped in a first-time cross from the right wing, flighted perfectly for Charlton Gauvain to apply the finishing touch, glancing in with his head for his second goal of the season.
Gauvain was put through again but denied by James Dillon, but Rovers responded well and were unlucky not to be level having rattled the woodwork twice before the break. They were then handed the ideal opportunity to level as Jordan Wilson was felled by Jacob Fallaize just inside the area. Addison guessed correctly and dived left, stretching his arm up to keep out Aaron Jenkins’ penalty and the Green Lions eventually cleared after a scramble.
Guernsey looked to be seeing the game out in the second half and should have made the points safe in the closing stages as their hosts left gaps in search of an equaliser. Substitute Brandon Wallace was denied by Dillon and also beat the Sutton stopper with a chip but the ball bounced just wide.
Addison saved a close-range effort in between those two chances to keep GFC in front, denying subsitute Nabeel Ghannam who had weaved his way into a shooting position. Wallace came close again sliding in at the far post but couldn’t quite make contact with Tom Vaudin’s cross.
But the Green Lions’ couldn’t hold out in injury time. The visitors called for a foul as Gabriel Odunaike outmuscled his marker and Ghannam slammed home a volley into the corner from the edge of the area.
But the drama wasn’t over as Ashley Sheppard provided another sting in the tail, finding the corner from the edge after good work again by Ghannam. The match had turned on its head with no time for the Sarnians to recover.
It leaves Guernsey 15th in Isthmian South Central with Saturday’s other results as follows: Corinthian-Casuals 2-1 Metropolitan Police, South Park 0-3 Raynes Park Vale, Thatcham Town 0-1 Badshot Lea.
