Welcome back Carlos

Guernsey’s Madeiran playmaker Carlos Canha returns to the squad for the first time this season as the Green Lions host old friend Westfield at Footes Lane on Saturday.

After helping Rovers to retaining their Priaulx League title in 2018, Canha became a regular for Tony Vance’s side in the 2018-19 season, also playing a key part the following season before the Covid-19 pandemic curtailed the campaign.

He has been managing an injury over the first few weeks and is looking forward to adding to his 55 appearance, and hopefully improving on his eight goals for the club so far.

Also back in is midfielder Charlton Gauvain, who rolled his ankle ahead of last weekend’s draw with Thatcham Town but has been passed fit to return for what will be GFC’s fourth of five consecutive home games. Tom Martin, who scored a belter last weekend, is hoping to be free of illness, with defender Louis Graham on standby.

It means Vance has plenty of attacking options. The full squad is as follows: 𝐴𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑛, 𝐾𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑦, 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑠ℎ, 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑤𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑔𝑒, 𝐿𝑒 𝑇𝑜𝑐𝑞, 𝐷𝑜𝑑𝑑𝑠, 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑛, 𝐾 𝑀𝑎ℎ𝑜𝑛, 𝐿 𝑀𝑎ℎ𝑜𝑛, 𝐴𝑐𝑒𝑦, 𝐺𝑎𝑢𝑣𝑎𝑖𝑛, 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝐶𝑎𝑛ℎ𝑎, 𝐴𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛, 𝑆𝑚𝑖𝑡ℎ, 𝐿𝑒𝑔𝑔.

This will be the first time Guernsey and Westfield have met in more than nine years, with ‘The Yellas’ being members of the Combined Counties League Division One in our debut season. This year, we won 5-0 away in September 2011, with Matt Loaring’s brace adding to goals from Dom Heaume, Ross Allen and Ryan-Zico Black. The return at Footes Lane was a 4-2 triumph for the Green Lions, with a double from substitute Dave Rihoy adding to first-half goals from Heaume and Allen. The Surrey-based side were promoted to Step Four after winning the CC Premier Division in 2018.

Westfield are 13th in Isthmian South Central having won two, drawn three and lost five of their opening 10 games, winning just once in the league since opening day. Last weekend saw them earn a 1-1 draw against fellow CCL club Bedfont Sports.

Guernsey are searching for a first win in three matches but a victory could take them as high as 10th, depending on other results, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.
