Guernsey v Hanworth Villa abandoned

Hanworth Villa     A

Guernsey’s final home game of the year, and final match before Christmas, was abandoned on Saturday afternoon due to a serious injury to a Hanworth Villa player.

The game was only 15 minutes old at Footes Lane when Kieran Mahon and Thomas Scott went into a challenge for the ball.

After a stoppage of more than an hour, during which time an ambulance was called and the player was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital, the referee made the decision that he did not wish for the game to continue.

Mahon was sent off for his part in the challenge. It was hard to tell exactly what happened from distance, but the general consensus from those in close proximity was that it was a committed 50/50 challenge from both players and there was no malice intended.

Everyone at Guernsey FC wishes Thomas Scott a speedy recovery.

A new date for the re-arranged fixture will be announced in due course.

The visitors had been leading thanks to a sixth minute penalty from Sam Merson after Jamie Dodd was adjudged to have pushed Meshach Williams. He drilled the ball confidently into the bottom left corner.

Martin had already saved a curling effort from Eliott Simpson, while Thomas Bender headed over from a corner and Merson was unlucky to see a header bounce down off the crossbar and cleared.

Guernsey’s only chance came as Danny Hale picked the ball up on the corner of the area and fired in low at the near post, but Gary Ross pushed it behind.
