Guernsey FC’s Development side put themselves in the driving seat of Group A in the Spirit Cup as they eased away from Vale Rec in the second half at Victoria Park on Wednesday night.
Leon Meakin’s side had their commanding lead halved just before the break but two quick goals midway through the half all but sealed the win before two further efforts put gloss on the scoreline.
Just as he had done the week before, to the minute, captain Jamie Dodd headed home at a corner on the half-hour to open the scoring. Bertie Beddow rattled the crossbar for Rec three minutes later.
Owen Tardif, diverting from the path of goalkeeping dad Chris (200 GFC appearances) by playing at right wing-back, doubled the lead on 43 minutes, tapping in at the near post. But in first-half injury time, Beddow had better luck as he drove through the centre of the field and drove the ball past Regan Penney.
Will Fazakerley bagged a brace in just a two-minute spell just before the midway point of the second half. First he tapped in Brandon Wallace’s low from just a yard out (with Callum Le Lacheur having released Wallace down the flank with a deft flick round the corner) then headed home powerfully from Aston Young’s looping cross.
Penney showed great reflexes to turn Glenn Le Tissier’s close-range volley onto the bar, but Young made it 5-1 on 72 minutes as he ran onto a through ball and finished calmly. Just four minutes later it was six as Le Lacheur got in on the act, beating the offside trap and stroking home from just inside the area.
GFC’s youngsters are the only side in Group A with a spotless record and need just a point against North next Wednesday to confirm top spot in the group and a place in the Spirit Cup semi-finals.
