Bedfont Sports 6-0 Guernsey: Green Lions end with a whimper but hosts down anyway

Guernsey finished off their 2022/23 season in thoroughly disappointing fashion as they were thrashed 6-0 at Bedfont Sports on Saturday.

It was all in vain for the hosts as other results meant that they were condemned to relegation anyway. Three nil was frustrating enough, but perhaps they had been made aware that things weren’t going for them in the other games and took out their anger on GFC by doubling theat advanteges in the space of a few minutes at the end of the game.

Tony Vance had said he wanted a strong, winning end to the season after the Green Lions secured their safety against South Park, but despite a good performance against Basingstoke Town, the Sarnians have limped over the finish line with a combined nine goals against in their final two games.

A couple of early chances from Matt Loaring and Charlton Gauvain were false dawns as Bedfont went in front inside seven minutes, although there was an element of luck about it as Nathan Hogan’s cross beat everyone and went in off the far ost.

Keene Domaille’s rising effort from the edge of the area clipped the bar on its way over and Brandon Wallace was crowded out before he could take advantage of a loose touch from the home defence.

Hogan made it two for him and his team on 17 minutes as he finished off some neat build-up play.

Jason Martin kept it down to two temporarily, saving Aidan Brown’s penalty after the forward had gone down under pressure from a couple of Guernsey defenders.

Loaring and Gauvain were off target again as they half drew to a close, but Jake Beck-Nardoni broke through the GFC backline to make it three in the final five minutes of the half.

Martin tipped over to deny Cerny Ando just after the hour, while Domaille couldn’t hit the target after being teed up by Loaring. Sam Murray’s powerful effort on 73 minutes was blocked in the nick of time by Kayode Conteh.

Murray could have set up a tense finish with five minutes to go as he headed just over at the far post, but then the visitors collapsed.

Substitute Kofi Anoyke-Boadi came off the bench to grab a brace, his first intercepting Tom Vaudin’s header back towards Martin on 88’ minutes and adding another in stoppage-time. Fellow replacement Sam Evans completed the rout.

Despite the scoreline, the Eagles were unable to celebrate it after learning that they would be returning to the Combined Counties Premier League. Merstham had earned a point against Westfield and Sutton Common Rovers beat Ashford Town.

Guernsey finish the season in 15th place. Despite a disappointing end to the season, they can be proud of the work they put in between January and April to rise off the bottom to secure safety. Saturday’s other results were as follows: Basingstoke Town 3-1 South Park [BASINGSTOKE ARE CHAMPIONS], Chipstead 0-2 Hanworth Villa, Leatherhead 2-2 Binfield, Merstham 2-2 Westfield, Northwood 3-1 Marlow, Southall 4-1 Chertsey Town, Sutton Common Rovers 1-0 Ashford Town, Thatcham Town 2-2 Walton & Hersham; Uxbridge 0-4 Tooting & Mitcham United.
