It’s third versus second on Saturday at Victoria Park as Guernsey take on Steyning Town in what is their sternest test so far at home this season in a game that could really shape GFC’s outlook for the rest of the season.
The Barrowmen are unbeaten in 17 league games and their run includes a point against runaway leaders Haywards Heath Town. But that single defeat of the season? The Green Lions. Goals from Will Fazakerley and Fin du Port gave Tony Vance’s side a statement win at the end of September, which also featured a key save near the end from substitute goalkeeper Jordan Kelly.
Victory for the Sarnians would close the gap to their opponents to eight points with two games in hand in the Southern Combination Premier Division. There will be changes to the side as Fin du Port and Frazer Maginnis are unavailable, adding to the continued absence of Jacob Fallaize and Jamie Dodd, Seb Vance and Matt Loaring. But Tony Vance and his coaching team still have competition for places with the return of Will Fazakerley and Tom Vaudin, Simon Arnold and Niall Hainsworth now all back in the fold after injury.
Guernsey still have Horsham YM and in-form Peacehaven & Telscombe breathing down their necks so need to keep up the momentum they have built with nine wins in 10 games. Both teams could leapfrog GFC should we fail to win although we still have a game in hand on them both. A fifth win in a row would equal our best run of the season ahead of a tricky midweek trip to Bexhill United on Wednesday.
Steyning boast the league’s two highest scorers Stan Bridgman (29 goals) and Dion Jarvis (24), with the former scoring in the reverse fixture. They are the only two players keep Sam Murray off the top of the charts in the race for the Golden Boot.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans unable to make it to Victoria Park can listen to full live commentary via Facebook Live and on our @GuernseyFC X Space, as well as keep up with our usual social media updates. A full match report will follow.
Make sure you pick up a copy of our matchday programme for a chance to win a prize. The prize for the buyer of the winning programme is a three course meal for two at The Pickled Pig.
Anna Gauvain’s Green Lionesses have unfortunately had their trip to AFC Varsity on Sunday postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and more wet weather on the way.
