Charlton Gauvain was the difference maker again as Guernsey put in another resilient performance on the road to claim all three points at Roffey on a scorching Saturday afternoon.
With the heavyweights of Ross Allen, Sam Murray and Will Fazakerley absent, captain Gauvain led the line again and, as he did a week ago, netted the decisive goal early on before his fellow Green Lions produced another resilient defensive display to shut out the Boars.
The backline were under heavy pressure for the majority of the game without giving up too many clear cut chances. But they only needed one of their own and it came in the seventh minute. Jacques Cauvin made a good run down the right and crossed, which took a ricochet off a defence and fell kindly for Gauvain to knock the ball in.
Guernsey’s number seven could have doubled the lead after 15 minutes after he was picked out by a cross from the left but put the ball wide of a gaping net.
Charlie Gibson had the hosts’ first efforts on target towards the end of the half, stinging Josh Addison’s palms from the edge of the box.
Roffey turned up the pressure in the second half, coming particularly close as Jordan Mase’s shot took a deflection and looped just over the bar. Mase also glanced a header just wide on the hour.
The Greens could have made life a little more comfortable for themselves but Gauvain headed wide after a great run and cross from Dylan Graham. Substitute George Goubert was also denied by Charlie Burton in injury time.
Josh Addison was in the wars, dislocating a finger saving a shot. Luckily, the referee was a trained paramedic and clicked his finger back into place and he was able to finish the game – though he might have felt it once the adrenaline wore off!
Graham and Corey Brouard both their full debuts for the club and Brandon Wallace made his first appearance of the season after injury as the Lions produced another clean sheet that leaves them among the early frontrunners.
The win leaves unbeaten Guernsey with three wins out of four in the Southern Comination Premier Division. Saturday’s other results were as follows: Billingshurst 2-4 Eastbourne United, Crawley Down Gatwick 4-2 Forest Row, Horsham YM 1-3 Lancing.
