Guernsey FC Women got their first home win of the season in style as they bagged double figures for the second time this season on Sunday afternoon.
You had to feel for the visitors, who travelled light on numbers (including apparently missing their two best players at short notice) and lost a player to injury in the first half, but the Greens kept up their ruthlessness, getting a first clean sheet of the campaign in the process.
The Lionesses made a positive start, with a neat one-two down the right between Adrienne Leech and Donna Gallienne setting up the former to whip in a cross, which Calleigh Hedley got on the end of but Daisy Burnfield was able to hold. Candice Bougourd’s corner also caused a goalmouth scramble that ended with her dragging a shot wide.
Guernsey’s strong start got its reward with two goals in three minutes before the quarter hour mark. It was the same combination twice as Leech whipped in a cross from the right, with Hedley reaching it at the far post and steering it back across goal and in, the second being more central from the edge of the six-yard box. Leech had been set away from the second after receiving a probing pass from Mollie Watson and nutmegging her marker.
In between those goals, Amy Dallamore had also run in behind and forced a good block form Burnfield, but she continued her promising form in front of goal midway through the half to make it 3-0, burying the rebound from close range after Hedley had forced another save from Burnfield.
Captain Candice Bougourd made it four on the half-hour with a lovely finish (below) over Burnfield after being teed up by Codie Le Flem. Leech buried after a goalmouth scramble just two minutes later to make it five before the break.
Le Flem could have made it six just another two minutes after that but her powerful effort was beaten away by Burnfield. Heidi Dawber then pulled the ball back for fellow substitute Elise Le Lacheur but her powerful effort was pushed away by Burnfield.
Dallamore got her second and Guernsey’s sixth just three minutes into the second half, finishing off a lovely one-touch passing move that she had been a part of along with Le Flem and Le Lacheur. Heidi Dawber then had a header saved and fired wide in quick succession.
Anna Gauvain was in a happy position of being able to give her rolling substitutes plenty of game time. One of those was Ruby Smith, who bagged the seventh just minutes after coming on, beating team mate Le Lacheur to the ball to tap in Dawber’s cross from close range.
Emma Queripel was called upon for her only save nearly an hour in, blocking from Leanne Harvey after she had pressured Elenitsa Lambrou into conceding possession – Harvey also sent a free-kick wide. Hedley was then denied from the angle by Burnfield at her near post. Burnfield was having a good game despite the score and then held to deny Leech a second.
Smith got her second midway through the second half to make it eight, again tucking in from close range after good work by Leech and Hedley. Hedley then beat Burnfield to a ball over the top but prodded it wide before Smith completed her quickfire hat-trick, running clear onto a ball from midfield and slotting home.
Hedley got in behind but blazed wide, then was kept out by a good Burnfield block when one-on-one as she chased her own treble.
Eryn James nearly scored a scorcher from 30 yards but Burnfield recovered well to turn it around the post. The resulting corner was handled in the area by a defender and Hedley drilled home the penalty to complete her hat-trick and ensure double figures for the Green Lionesses for the second time this season.
Burnfield denied Smith a fourth from close range, while Le Flem came close to topping the cake with an 11th but sliced wide from a good position in the closing stages.
The goal difference boost means the Sarnians move up to fourth in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South, albeit having played more games than anyone else. Bognor Regis Town beat Bournemouth Sports Reserves 3-2 in the weekend’s only other league game.
