89Goals: MacDonald 40’; Barham 45+2’; McKenzie 58’; Fuseine 90’.
Guernsey suffered a second consecutive 4-0 defeat in Greenwich as their strong South London opponents saw them off without too much bother on Saturday.
Borough triumphed over the Green Lions by the same scoreline on the final day of last season and this occasion was pretty much just as comfortable – although this time both sides finished the game with 10 men.
Two goals either side of the break were enough to see off Tony Vance’s side, who will be pleased to see the back of the heavily-resourced Greenwich for another season.
The Sarnians did the bulk of the defending right from the off, but few clear-cut chances materialised – although Will Dennis had to make a really smart stop to deny Charlie MacDonald’s header from point-blank range with Chinedu McKenzie offside as he bundled in the rebound. At the other end, Craig Young’s curler forced a smart save from George Kamurasi shortly before the half-hour mark.
Will Dennis, as he has done so many times this season, came to his side’s rescue on 35 minutes. Matt Loaring lost possession too easily in midfield and with the hosts having broken forward, Jack Samoutis let fly only for Dennis to stretch out an arm and tip it over.
The hosts’ pressure was not going to go unrewarded for too much longer and they took a deserved lead in the last few minutes of the half. Some neat play down the right saw Jack Barham whip a cross in from the byline, which Charlie MacDonald met at the near post with his head to edge his side in front.
Vance’s side could have regrouped and come out with a different game plan for the second half had they managed to keep the scoreline to one at the break, but GFC frustratingly conceded in literally the final few seconds of the half to go two behind. A right-wing corner, with McKenzie’s low shot having been deflected wide, was headed down towards the far post and Barham reacted quickest to help it into the net.
It was more of the same in the second half. It could have been three a couple of minutes earlier than it was as Dennis spilled Barham’s shot allowing MacDonald to tap in from a yard out, but the flag went up for offside.
An offside decision – or non-decision – was then to work against the Green Lions only a minute or so later as they went three behind to see the result pretty much wrapped up.
Vance was furious that Barham was not penalised as he rose to head down a Greenwich clearance to a team-mate, with the Guernsey boss adamant the number nine came from a clearly-offside position when the ball was kicked. No such decision was forthcoming and MacDonald slotted the ball through for McKenzie to stroke it past Dennis from just inside the area on 58 minutes.
Guernsey’s tough task was given a slight reprieve moments later on the hour as Samoutis appeared to throw a forearm towards the neck of Harry Tobin. The referee had absolutely no hesitation in producing the red card.
That helped towards a mini resurgence for the Green Lions as substitute Charlton Gauvain scooped one towards the far post from the edge of the area. It was parried wide by Kamurasi, who was also equal to Rihoy’s follow-up from the angle.
But then momentum swung back the other way and after Frank Tobin had surrendered possession on the edge of his own area, Simon Geall was involved in a tangle of legs with Barham, bringing the number nine down in the process for a penalty. Barham took the kick himself but for the second time in two games, Dennis got down to parry it away.
The Green Lions were still searching for a consolation, though, and returning substitute Paris Pereira brought another save from Kamurasi as he tried to curl a low shot into the far corner.
Matt Loaring was then given his marching orders for an alleged arm swung at his marker – the Guernseyman later protested his innocence – that made it two red cards in two games for the Green Lions, but there was time for another goal as MacDonald was the beneficiary of a loose ball in the box, pulling back for Ali Fuseine to bury from 12 yards.
All in all, a disappointing afternoon for the Green Lions, but their sights immediately turn to two home games between Christmas and New Year that Vance will feel are a realistic chance for maximum points.
