Guernsey ensured their Sunday second-half surrender against Ramsgate was a mere blip in a good run of form as they saw off table-proppers Shoreham with a convincing 3-0 victory at the Taxi-Link Community Stadium on Tuesday night.
All three goals, including a first of the season from Ryan-Zico Black and a brace from Harry Tobin to make it four in three games, came from set pieces – but such was the Green Lions’ attacking threat throughout the 90, they should have added two or three more from open play.
It meant the Sarnians have claimed a fourth away win of the season and a fourth clean sheet in six games.
With the game originally moved to a 3G surface in North London due to a waterlogged pitch at Middle Road, and then moved back again, the rain just before kick-off made for a heavy and slippery surface, but GFC coped the better and in their flexible 4-4-2, went at the hosts from the off.
Their first chance was handed to them on a plate in the seventh minute – and would eventually lead to the opener – as Keanu Marsh was brought down on the edge of the area with the referee deciding the foul was inside the box and pointing to the spot. Having netted from 12 yards as recently as last week, Seb Skillen assumed responsibility for the penalty but his slightly-left-of-centre effort was parried behind by Josh Measor.
Luckily, the disappointment was only temporary as Black sent in the resulting corner and Harry Tobin met it to flick it home at the near post for an almost carbon copy of the opener he grabbed against Ramsgate on Sunday.
The chances continued to flow from a confident Guernsey and, after good work from Thomas Dodds, Skillen met the overlapping Harry Tobin’s pullback but took one touch too many when well placed to shoot and saw his opportunity snuffed out at the near post. Again, it was Black who sent in the resulting corner and Matt Loaring met it, only to see Paris Periera in his way to stop it on the line.
Luckily, again, that glorious chance would not matter as Black sent in another corner, this time from the left, that was met by the head of Harry Tobin, who sent it into the far corner for his fourth goal in three games.
Skillen sliced wide from 25 yards and Pereira stung the palms of Measor from range on the half-hour mark, shortly before Black saw his low shot cleared off the line after the midfielder met Keanu Marsh’s pullback.
Further slick football from the Green Lions saw Pereira tee up Matt Loaring for a dipping curler that required Measor to dive to his right to parry the shot away.
All before half-time, Black met a Frank Tobin cross but saw his close-range effort deflected wide, and Black squandered a chance at the near post after he met Loaring’s pullback with a heavy touch. Alvaro Costano’s cushioned volley well wide was all the Musselmen could offer in response.
The second half was a case of more of the same. Black intercepted a ball in midfield just two minutes in and fired just over the bar.
‘Zico’ didn’t have to wait long for his deserved strike, though, as Pereira was fouled by Evan Leitch 25 yards out on 50 minutes. It was a trademark free-kick from Black, whose pinpoint effort found the bottom corner despite Measor diving left and getting his hand to it to push it against the post.
Black then saw a bouncer loop over and a Loaring chance on the edge of the box was snuffed out shortly after as it looked like a case of how many for the Green Lions.
But the host fired a few warning shots around the hour mark. The first came when Stanton thought Ross Myers’ dipper from range was headed over wide, but It dipped wickedly and smacked off the upright. Stanton was a relieved man as Nana Baah’s follow-up header was directed straight at him.
Nick Collyer then met Myers’ flick over the top and cut inside only to see Stanton deny him at the near post with an excellent diving save. The resulting corner required the Guernsey stopper to make two outstanding reaction stops, blocking both the initial header from Castano and the angled rebound at his near post from Josh Tuck. Tadley Bromage smashed a furthr rebound well over on the volley.
Substitute Charlton Gauvain sent a shot high and wide after a tee-up by Loaring, and Seb Skillen skewed wide, twice, and over in incidents before and after another good chance when Measor pushed away Pereira’s low shot after the forward had broken into the area.
Stanton dealt with a routine low shot from Costano, shortly before Black fired just high and wide of the angle after Zac Felbabel chested down a cross for him on the edge of the six-yard box.
Another save from Stanton to deny a weak shot from Castano when through preceeded a couple of wayward efforts from Loaring, before Black came close to adding a deserved fourth in stoppage-time with a low shot from 25 yards, but none of the forwards following up on Measor’s parry were able to get on the end of the rebound.
The win ensures Guernsey re-leapfrogged Faversham Town into 19th, with a chance of moving up two places on Saturday if they beat Herne Bay. The other Tuesday night results were as follows: Greenwich Borough 1-2 Thamesmead Town, Herne Bay 1-2 Carshalton Athletic.
