Guernsey were beaten in their final match of the season on Saturday afternoon by Cray Wanders, who moved up to third place in Bostik South to guarantee themselves a home semi-final in the play-offs.

Although not as overrun as the scoreline suggests – much like Tuesday’s result – the game was more or less over at the break with the powerful Wands three goals to the good thanks to Michael Power, Junior Dadson and Kyron Farrell. The former completed the scoring midway through the second half to confirm his brace and bag his side’s 112th goal of the regular league campaign.

The Sarnians felt they should have had a penalty in the opening exchanges as Jacob Fallaize, who was forced off in the first half with an injury, looked to have been pushed over by his marker as he attacked a corner. But the referee ignored the decision and that was to prove costly.

Power lived up to his name with the opener as early as the eighth minute, as he smashed into the roof of the near from close range after Brandon Scott had kept the ball in on the byline.

Dadson got on the end of a slick passing move from the hosts to make it two on 26 minutes, tapping into an empty net at the far post after Power had slotted in Scott for a low delivery from the right byline.

Ryan-Zico Black twice ensured Nick Blue was not a mere spectator in the Cray goal, bringing two saves out of him from wicked free-kicks. One of those, which came before the second goal, left Tony Vance and his side furious as they felt the foul came inside the box and therefore should have been a penalty.

There was quite a large slice of luck for the third just before the interval, which effectively killed off the game from a result perspective, as Farrell’s shot from long range to a huge deflection and looped in the air, dipping into the far corner just out of Stanton’s reach.

Power swept home the fourth midway through the second half, controlling and shooting on the turn from close range after Farrell’s trickery on the left byline had set him up. Karl Dent curled narrowly wide of the far post with a lovely effort a few minutes later.

Power should have had his hat-trick in the closing stages as substitute Charlie MacDonald teed him up inside the six-yard box. All he had to do was help it in but poked it straight at Stanton, who made the block from point-blank range.

Replacement Charlton Gauvain also cleared the far post from 25 yards out as the game ticked into its final minutes, and Matt Loaring came close to finding the top corner with a dink from just outside the area after he had brought down a high ball.

Michael Frieter’s late effort was more a pass into the arms of Stanton after the former had run on to Power’s throughball.

A disappointing result but the Green Lions knocked the ball around nicely in spells, and two heavy defeats in the final two games of the season should not take away from an impressive final third of the season from Tony Vance’s side, in which they put in some impressive performances and earned some stellar results. They end the season in 11th place, an improvement of three league places and 11 points on 2016-17.
