Guernsey are still winless against Greenwich Borough in five attempts as their good run in Bostik South East was ended abruptly on Saturday.
It was the third time in a row the Green Lions have been on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline at the DRS Stadium, but despite the hosts being the better side and deserving the win, this time a much closer game over the 90 minutes meant the result didn’t really reflect the balance of the game.
Had key decisions gone GFC’s way at 1-0, there may well have been a different outcome, and Tony Vance’s side looked a good bet to level around the hour. There were also two very late goals from two lapses in concentration that skewed the scoreline somewhat.
It was a fairly quiet opening and it took 11 minutes for the first save to be made, which game from Callum Stanton as he dealt comfortably with a rising drive belted at goal by Laurent Mendy from 25 yards.
Teshaune-Tyreece Walters couldn’t direct a header as a met a cross swung in from the left wing, and then the Sarnians then started to gain more of a foothold in the game.
Craig Young’s low cross was almost turned in for an own-goal on 16 minutes but he fall was diverted just wide of the near post. Young then caught the Greenwich defence out by rolling the resulting corner to the edge of the area. Dave Rihoy met it with a powerful strike that would have had the net bulging had it not been for host keeper Tom McGill turning it over.
Mahon tried to catch McGill out shortly after with a free-kick from range but his low shot was easily gathered.
Two similar efforts from Ryan Deakin in quick succession, both powerful strikes from the edge of the area, first brought a save out of Stanton and then saw the second deflected behind. Laurent Mendy also looped a header onto the roof of the net after some trickery on the left wing from Ryan King-Elliott.
The pressure was building again from the home side and it eventually led to the opening goal with four minutes left of the first half. Deakin received the ball in the box and teed it up for Teshaune-Tyreece Walters to last the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the box, leaving Stanton with no chance.
Kyle Smith could have equalised immediately as a corner found him free at the near post but his bodyshape was wrong and so he could only send it wide.
Craig Young narrowly cleared the bar with a free-kick before the half was out, while Ryan King-Elliott curled well over after cutting in from the left.
Tony Vance had already been forced into an early change with Simon Geall going off injured for Keanu Marsh, but a dead leg for Kyle Smith meant another enforced substitution at the break with Paris Pereira coming on.
It was his endeavour that presented Guernsey’s best chance of the half he set the ball back to Will Fazakerley on the 18-yard line, who should have hit the target but his radar was off as his curling effort flew wide.
The Green Lions were edging on top in the game and a blistering run forward from centre-back by Frank Tobin earned a free-kick on the edge of the area. Unfortunately, Jamie Dodd lifted it well over the top.
Fazakerley then drove forward and slipped in Matt Loaring but his low shot was blocked by McGill. Liam Mahon chased for the rebound and appeared to be clipped on the back of the ankles, sending him to ground in the penalty area, but the referee waved away Guernsey’s strong appeals for the penalty.
The Green Lions’ pressure was making the game stretched and they were nearly caught on the counter as Walters chased a throughball, but the chasing Dodd did enough to force him wide, making the save from the angle a routine one from Stanton.
Dodd was pivotal again with a timely block as Mendy drifted across the area. The ball eventually found its way to King-Elliott, whose low shot to the near post was blocked by Stanton.
The hosts then struck the killer blow to kill off any momentum from the Green Lions. Deakin was given a yard too much space on the edge of the area and his neat dragback set him up to knock the ball into the bottom-left corner.
Shortly after, a jinking run from Walters saw him nutmeg Dodds and blast from the angle, but Stanton flung himself to his right to divert it behind. Stanton’s saves were totting up as he then held a straightforward curler from Deakin and scooped up a half-hearted effort from Walters.
Lapses in concentration allowed Deakin to bag his hat-trick, first firing low across goal from the angle, then tapping in after King-Elliott had nicked the ball off a sleeping Frank Tobin on the right byline and pulled the ball back.
The result leaves Guernsey 14th in Bostik South East with Saturday’s other results as follows: Ashford United 1-3 Cray Wanderers, East Grinstead Town 3-1 VCD Athletic, Horsham 1-0 Herne Bay, Hythe Town 3-1 Hastings United, Phoenix Sports 0-2 Whitstable Town, Ramsgate 2-1 Thamesmead Town, Sevenoaks Town 2-2 Haywards Heath Town, Sittingbourne 2-1 Whyteleafe, Three Bridges 2-4 Faversham Town.
