Guernsey and Chipstead shared the points in a pulsating six-goal thriller at Footes Lane on Wednesday night in what was the Green Lions’ 200th home league game.
Tim Ap Sion grabbed the night’s headlines. The sixteen-year-old was only named in the squad during the afternoon due to Liam Mahon’s illness, but came off the bench to score a brilliant equaliser.
It unfortunately spells the end of any realistic hopes of the Sarnians securing a top-half finish, but Tony Vance will have been pleased to see so much attacking intent from a Ross Allen-less side, even though they will feel they should have won playing against 10 man for nearly an hour.
It was a frantic start with a flurry of chances in the opening 10 minutes. Peter Wedgeworth sent a free-kick comfortably over for the visitors, while Jacob Fallazie got on the end of Jamie Dodd’s long throw but saw his effort diverted over by Matt Kerby. Charlton Gauvain made the peeling run from the resulting corner but his shot was blocked.
Callum McAllister caught a dropping ball on the half volley that flew over, and Armani-Jordan Martin failed to capitalise on a defensive error, shooting high and wide as GFC gave the ball away straight from the goal-kick.
Guernsey took the lead just after the clock ticked past 10 minutes. Dodd’s diagonal ball was only headed down as far as Ben Acey. He picked out Seb Skillen on the left, who squared for Fazakerley, still 25 yards out. The big number nine arrowed his low shot towards the bottom left corner and Kerbey got down to get a hand to it, but only as far as Keene Domaille, who tucked in the rebound for his first goal at Footes Lane, the perfect way to mark reaching double figures in appearances for the club.
GFC came close to another two minutes later as Acey lifted the ball over the top, but Seb Skillen, who had timed his run perfectly, could only hook it into the side netting with the outside of his foot.
Lucas Hanley was first called into action on 14 minutes, blocking as Andy Kabuikusomo turned on the edge of the box, shortly before Charlton Gauvain headed straight at Kerbey from another Dodd looper.
The Green Lions were guilty of overdoing it when the visitors equalised. Acey tried to beat one man too many in attack and with green shirts flooded forward, Kabuikusomo had most of the GFC half to drive into before slotting under Hanley from the edge of the box.
But it was only 10 minutes before the hosts were back in front again. Gauvain did brilliantly on the right to bring down a high ball and play the ball square into the box. Fazakerley, who was involved earlier in the move, ran onto it and stroked it under Kerbey.
There was still plenty of danger at the other end as Fallaize headed out from under his own crossbar after miscommunication with Hanley, but the Green Lions got a boost seven minutes before half-time when the Chips went down to 10 men.
Daryl Coleman had already been involved in a disagreement with Acey, and extracted revenge by lunging into a tackle on the left touchline. After the resulting melee had died down, the referee had an easy decision in showing the midfielder the red card.
However, Guernsey gave their visitors something to hang onto as they got back on level terms three minutes before the break. A corner came in from the left, and McAlister attacked it, but it looked to be Dave Rihoy who diverted it in for an own goal.
The second half was there for the taking, and Guernsey nearly got back in front within four minutes of the restart as Tom Martin burst into the box and stabbed at goal, but a slight deflection took it just wide. Fazakerley attacked the far post and got his head to the resulting corner, but Kerbey turned it over the top.
A heart-in-mouth moment turned to relief on 52 minutes thanks to a brilliant double save from Hanley. The defence at let a cross reach Kabuikusomo at the far post, who cut in onto his left foot and shot low. Hanley got down to make a brilliant block, then smothering the ball as the Chips striker had another go.
Hanley saved again at his near post a few minutes later, denying Kieran Lavery after Martin had kept a corner alive.
Once again, Guernsey were punished for overplaying as they fell behind on 57 minutes. Chipstead won the ball back after the hosts tried to run the ball clear rather than clear it or find a pass, and a foul was given as the visitors burst forward. Martin couldn’t have placed his free-kick any better, picking out the top right corner from 25 yards for 3-2.
McAllister nearly doubled their lead two minutes later as he collected a punch from Hanley and arrowed one across goal, where it flew just wide.
After that, though, GFC asserted themselves back on the game. Gauvain’s cross from the left evaded everyone only to bounce off the foot of the far post, then Domaille rose to head against the bar after more brilliant work by Gauvain out wide.
It was shaping up to be another disappointing midweek home outing, until Ap Sion made his mark just moments after coming on. He timed his run to latch onto Fazakerley’s knockdown from Dodd’s diagonal ball and hit it early, driving the ball across goal into the far corner to make a name for himself on his debut.
Dave Rihoy could have won it with eight minutes of normal time left, but he curled just over after Gauvain’s low delivery across goal had been diverted in his direction.
Hanley saw a half-volley from Charlie Kennett skid wide in the final five minutes, but that was it despite seven minutes of added time, and the points were shared.
GFC stay 13th in Isthmian South Central as they move onto 35 points, and their next target is Ashford Town three points in front, but they will have to do it the hard way with third-placed Bedfont Sports visiting on Saturday.
