Guernsey will be glad their summer break has finally arrived after a gruelling season, crammed into just seven months, ended in defeat at play-off bound Hanwell Town on Saturday.

It was almost carbon copy of the reverse fixture at Footes Lane, with Seb Skillen’s first goal of the season putting the Green Lions 1-0 up at half-time. The Geordies turned it round in the second half, partly thanks to a controversial equaliser, and skewed the score somewhat with two goals in the latest of injury time.

That came due to a 20-minute stoppage when Lucas Hanley received a heavy kick to the head, and was eventually taken to hospital (luckily, he was discharged to return home that evening). Glenn Le Tissier was the only remaining substitute on the Sarnian bench and agreed to don the gloves with the score at 1-1. To his credit, he performed admirably and made several saves.

It was mostly a game where GFC were trying to keep their opponents at bay. Massimo Giamattei’s half-volley whistled just over as the hosts attacked straight from kick-off, while Dan Carr was off target from range.

Hanley held as Ogo Obi drove into the box and shot low, then Calum Duffy headed narrowly off-target from a corner. Obi then sliced wide after a bit of a scramble in the Guernsey and then misjudged a cross, heading up into the air from just a couple of yards out, enabling Hanley to claim.

Guernsey’s first chance on the break earned the opening goal midway through the half. Tom Jackson collected the ball and moved it on to Skillen, whose lovely ball round the corner set Ben Acey away. Acey played in Matt Loaring down the right, and the lively attacker unselfishly squared across goal, but the ball was slightly behind the run of Acey. After what seemed like an age, Skillen ran onto the loose ball and drove it across goal into the far corner for a shock lead.

After Acey and Loaring nearly combined to add a second, Tomasz Siemienczuk blew a glorious chance to level the game as he ran through on goal but steered over the top.

Acey came within a whisker of doubling the visitors’ lead when he ran on to Liam Mahon’s pulled-back corner, but his dipping effort flew just wide of the top corner.

Hanlay came out to defend his near post as Siemenczuk strode in on goal, then Obi was guilty of blocking a shot from his own team-mate as he got in the way of Giamattei’s effort.

The second half was more of the same dominance from the hosts. Carr cut inside only to hit straight at Hanley early on.

But Guernsey’s lead only lasted seven minutes of the half, but the equaliser came in bizarre fashion. Jackson caught Tom Strawbridge’s attempted clearance straight in the back of the head. The ball bounced towards Hanley, who felt he had the ball in two hands as he was challenged by Siemenczuk, but the referee ignored the appeals as the ball rolled loose and Sam Saunders tapped into the empty net.

To add insult to injury, Siemenczuk’s challenge resulted in a whack to the face for Hanley, a potentially very serious head injury that the referee appeared to completely ignore, even in the aftermath of the incident. After a stoppage of more than 20-minutes. A clearly groggy Hanley was helped into an ambulance and play finally resumed, with Le Tissier stepping in as emergency goalkeeper.

Hanwell were sure to put the pressure on now, and were soon in front as a corner was swung into the near post, bounced off a defender and fell loose for substitute Gareth Chendlik, who couldn’t miss from a yard out with his first touch of the game.

In the circumstances, Le Tissier did a sterling job, saving from Dernell Wynter and Tom Collins, and being decisive off his line to snuff out a few dangerous balls into the box.

It took until the 11^th minute of stoppage time for Hanwell to grab a third. Saunders picked out the run of Giamattei on the left, and he slid the ball across goal for Chendlik to tap into an empty net, his brace coming from a combined distance of no more than three yards.

Wynter clipped the crossbar from the edge of the area, but there was still time for another goal.

For all his good work, Le Tissier held his hands up for a mistake that led to Hanwell’s fourth, 22 minutes into injury time. His kick out lacked height and went straight to Wynter, who tucked the ball into the empty net.
