A late first-half flurry was enough to earn the Green Lions a precious three points in their survival battle as they saw off promotion-chasing Binfield at Footes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Jacob Fallaize, Matt Loaring and Ross Allen in the final quarter-hour of the half was the sort of ruthlessness we haven’t seen in a while that gave them a cushion that was too much for the Moles to overcome despite pulling one back midway through the half.

The Sarnians put their bodies on the line to make crucial box in the closing stages and ensure the points were safe.

Tom Martin was thrown straight back into the starting line-up after finally coming to the end of a suspended suspension, while Joe Alaverez got an unexpected hour on his return from injury, replacing Jamie Dodd in the first half.

Neither side were able to be clinical in the first half-hour as they traded blows. Brad Pagliaroli’s cross glanced wide off the head of Conor Lynch early on, while Josh Addison was first called into action in the 10th minute as he saved smartly to his right when a delivery from the left teed Conor Lynch up for a quick shot.

Danny Hale had a glorious chance to put his side in front as he was put through on goal, but for whatever reason couldn’t make his mind up, and instead of shooting tried to take the ball around the goalkeeper and the chances was snuffed out.

Harrison Bayley looped a header harmlessly over and Lewis Pegg hooked over both his shoulder and the crossbar as the ball bounced around the Guernsey area.

Lynch dragged well wide from distance after picking up a loose ball midway inside the Guernsey half.

Hale was tripped on the half-hour as Allen teed him up on the edge of the box, and after a long injury delay to the man who committed the foul, Kai Hobbs, Alvarez hit the wall.

Addison got down and held as Harry Harvey curled low towards the far post, then came the breakthrough for the Sarnians.

Matt Loaring’s endeavour in chasing a lost cause earned his side a corner. Dave Merris drove it in with precision and Fallaize got free of his man to rise and plant home a header.

Binfield offered a brief reply, following a vital intervention at the far post by Fallaize, as the resulting corner was cleared out to Pagliaroli, but his first-time hit spun wide.

With a minute left of the half, Guernsey doubled their lead. Allen charged down a clearance and drove towards the byline. He whipped the ball across goal and running in at the far post, Loaring couldn’t miss as he helped the ball over the line.

Lynch headed narrowly wide from substitute James Beauchamp’s cross (the visitors lost two players of their own to injury in the first half to remind the Green Lions there was still very much a threat.

However, the Green Lions found a perfectly-timed third in stoppage time. Allen was chopped down on the corner of the area and Alvarez clipped in the free-kick. Loaring met it with his head but his effort was turned wide by Harvey Rackley-Hayes. Merris was the architect of the goal again, this time pulling his delivery back to meet Allen’s arced run, and the number 10 drilled it home from just inside the area.

The Sarnians could have had a fourth within a minute of the second half kick-off to really kill the game off. Murray nodded over the backline to put Loaring in, but hesitated and was tackled.

On 50 minutes, Loaring turned on edge of the box but a deflection took the sting out his shot and it looped through to Rackley-Hayes.

Connor Holland didn’t catch a volley well and it rolled into Addison, while at the other end, Allen took advantage of a sloppy attempt by Binfield try to shield ball away from the byline. He fired across goal and Murray threw his head at in from close range, but can’t steer it below the bar.

A decent hit on half volley from Jonathan Denton from corner of the area swerved away from Addison’s goal as the visitors started to increase the pressure as they sought a route back into the game.

Beauchamp found himself free at the far post but hooked back across goal instead of applying having a go himself and no-one was there to provide a finishing touch.

Tom Dodds breathed a sigh of relief after deflecting the ball onto his own crossbar. Pegg had a go from outside the area as he collected the loose ball but Addison held it.

The Moles gave themselves a glimmer of hope on 65 minutes. Addison saved the initial shot as Beauchamp burst though, but the loose ball fell for Lynch, who tucked in from the angle.

This was the cue for the visitors to turn it up a notch. Beauchamp had another effort deflected wide as he surged towards goal, and Brandon Curtis fired a free-kick into the wall. Play went on and Fallaize saved his team by heading off the line.

There were now gaps at the other end and GFC tried to stay on the front foot. Allen clipped a nice ball across the area for substitute Dave Rihoy, but he miscued his volley.

Harvey Harry headed into the side netting after Harrison Bayley’s half-volley had been deflected wide, before Fallaize and Liam Gavin traded off-target headers.

As well as his earlier goal-line clearance, Fallaize threw himself into the front running for man of the match in the closing stages. First, his goal-saving tackle spared Keene Domaille’s blushes after the substitute undid his initial good work by playing Beauchamp in with a sloppy backpass. Fallaize cleared off the line for a third time in time added on as it got a bit hairy with scrambled defending in the dying moments.

But the Sarnians held their two-goal cushion and claimed three vital points that sent the up to 17th in Isthmian South Central.
