79Goals: Holland 11’ – Allen 60’; Murray 90’.
Sam Murray stole in to get Guernsey back to winning ways in dramatic fashion and drag them out of the relegation play-off places on Tuesday night.
The Green Lions’ leader in the race for the 2022-23 Golden Boot robbed Moles goalkeeper Harvey Rackley-Hayes of the ball and had the simplest of tasks to snatch all three points in the 90th minute.
Ross Allen had levelled on the hour as the Green Lions recovered from an early setback to leapfrog Bedfont Sports into 16th and ensure they did the double over Binfield, whom they had beaten 3-1 at Footes Lane just 11 days earlier.
A point would have been extremely useful in itself, with key players missing for a midweek away trip – including their two first-choice centre-backs in Jacob Fallaize and Jamie Dodd and the heart of their midfield in Kieran Mahon and Dave Merris – but Colin Fallaize’s charges were not content to settle for that as they increased the pressure as the game went on.
They were also grateful to the woodwork and some stellar work from Josh Addison – becoming only the third goalkeeper to make 50 GFC appearances after Chris Tardif and Callum Stanton – and his defence during the course of the game, but the Green Lions deserve some luck.
The Sarnians have certainly rediscovered their scoring touch. There were times this season when we were wondering how we were going to score another goal, but they are now on a scoring streak of eight straight games, their best since a run of 15 matches between April and October 2019.
Addison fielded easily as Steve Ngunga cut inside and tried his luck from 20 yards inside three minutes and the referee waved away appeals from a penalty as the Guernsey stopper pinch the ball away from the feet of Conor Lynch inside five.
Brandon Wallace teed up Murray for their first chance on eight minutes following a neat one-two, but Rackley-Hayes got down to his left to beat it away from the angle. Murray then flicked on Keanu Marsh’s throw but Keene Domaille could only drag wide of the near post.
The visitors were punished for not taking either of those opportunities as they fell behind within 10 minutes. Harrison Bayley slipped through Connor Holland, who went round the advancing Addison and tucked it away, despite the efforts of Marsh sliding back but he was only able to slow it down as it trickled in.
Jonathan Denton sent a free-kick harmlessly over Addison’s crossbar on 18 minutes, with Brad Pagliaroli following suit from open play shortly after.
Lynch waster a golden opportunity to double the Moles’ lead just before the half-hour as he ran onto Holland’s cushioned ball over the Guernsey defence, but under pressure from Tom Vaudin, miscued it high over the top.
Pagliori jinked away from Marsh on 36th minutes but dragged his pea-roller wide by some distance.
Wallace set up Murray up for an almost identical chance to his earlier one, and it was the same result as Rackley-Hayes pushed it away. Shortly after, Allen rolled the ball home at the near post but the assistant referee’s flag quickly went up for a foul in the build-up.
Addison kept his side in the contest in first-half stoppage time, preventing what would have been a killer blow by stretching an arm to turn over Bayley’s effort from the edge of the box.
The Green Lions had plenty of reason to be optimistic when they came out for the second half, but had to avoid a couple of early scares. Loaring slid an inviting ball across goal within a minute of the restart that the sliding Murray could not quite get a toe to. The hosts went straight up the other end and the visitors breathed a sigh of relief as Pagliori’s rising drive from the corner of the area bounced off the crossbar to safety.
Joe Alvarez was in the way has Pagliori arrowed another effort at goal and Addison helped Kai Hobbs’ angled drive over the bar, and it looked like the Sarnians would have to use their threat on the counter attack to get anything from the game.
Murray laid the ball off for Domaille to have a swing at it from 25 yards but could only slice it wide just before the hour, but Guernsey’s pressure from the resulting goal-kick forced the equaliser as Wallace closed down, then drew a foul from, Hobbs.
Liam Mahon swung in the free-kick, and Allen got in ahead of his man to meet the cross with the outside of his right boot and hook it past Rackley-Hayes.
Holland cleared the bar as Binfield sought an instant response, while Rackley-Hayes rushed out to beat Wallace to the ball is he chased it in behind. The reds countered and Liam Gavin somehow failed to convert from six yards, miss-controlling and allowing Addison to scoop up the loose ball.
Domaille, a scorer at Ashford on Saturday, was kicking himself that he didn’t add to his tally with just under 20 minutes to go, his attempt to lob Rackley-Hayes drifting harmless wide after Lewis Pegg had failed to head away substitute Danny Hale’s ball forward.
The Green Lions were sensing now that three points were well and truly up for grabs. Vaudin could only stab at Allen’s cross against a defender on 74 minutes.
Addison was the calmest man in Hill Farm lane as he watched Brandon Curtis’ shot across goal roll narrowly wide via a deflection while Allen was disappointed to drive over as he broke into the box with less than 10 minutes on the clock.
It looked like the game was heading for a well-earned draw between two good sides, but there was one more twist in the tale. Murray sensed danger as Pegg cushioned a slightly awkward bouncing ball back to Rackley-Hayes. The stopper’s first touch was heavy and the big number nine nicked the ball off him and went round him. Avoiding the temptation to hit it early from a more awkward ankle, he kept his cool and took the ball closer to goal, tucking it over the line from a couple of yards out just ahead of a desperate attempt from a defender to get back on the line to complete the ultimate smash-and-grab.
Those in the Guernsey dug-out were now celebrating every time the ball went out of play for a Guernsey throw or goal-kick in stoppage-time, and Fallaize was quickly over to roar with delight for the camera when the final whistle went. Not even news of a late Bedfont Sports equaliser at Chertsey Town could dampen their spirits as Guernsey confirmed their exit from the bottom four for the first time since very early on in the campaign.
With Binfield, South Park and Hanworth Villa all seen off in recently weeks, the Green Lions have another play-off hopeful in their sights this weekend when Chertsey head to Footes Lane.
The rest of the midweek results (except for Southall and Basingstoke Town, who faced off on Thursday) in Isthmian South Central were as follows: Merstham 0-0 Tooting & Mitcham United, Ashford Town 2-2 Hanworth Villa, Chertsey Town 1-1 Bedfont Sports, Chipstead 0-2 Walton & Hersham.
