Guernsey weren’t at the races at Ascot as the Isthmian South Central newcomers won at a canter on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellas were dominant throughout and the Green Lions could have no complaints at the result.

Despite that, United needed a bit of luck to break the deadlock on 25 minutes. Harry Grant was aiming for a team mates in the middle when he whipped in a cross, but to his delight the ball sailed straight in at the near post, catching out Guernsey goalkeeping debutant Christian Povall.

Harvey Killen fired just over after good work from George Lock to get into the box and Povall denied Brandan Matthews with a good save, but the Ascot striker continued his fine start to the season at the perfect time as he doubled his side’s league in first-half stoppage time.

The prolific forward, who already bagged a Ross Allen-like total of 46 goals to help his side to a league and FA Vase double last season and started this campaign with five goals in four games, was adjudged to have been fouled by Tom Dodds in the box and stroked the resulting penalty clamly into the bottom corner.

If Guernsey had hung on until half-time with just the one-goal deficit, it could have inspired a second-half revival, but this killer blow just before the break was always going to be difficult to recover from and the hosts took more confidence into the second half.

Killeen was denied when through on goal and substitute Oliver McCoy hit the crossbar early in the second half, while Dan Bailey headed just wide.

Matthew went through one on one to make it three with his brace just before the hour, and substitute Oliver McCoy completed the scoring a couple of minutes before the end with a fine goal.

GFC were denied a consolation of their own before the end as Hugo Sobte pulled off an excellent save to keep out Charlton Gauvain’s free-kick, but that was as good as it got for the Green Lions.

A win over South Park on Monday would still represent a positive start to the season. Luckily it comes quickly enough for the Sarnians to put this one a few furlongs behind them.

Guernsey ended the day in 15th place with Saturday’s other results as follows: Binfield 1-1 Chipstead, Corinthian-Casuals 1-4 Marlow, Hanworth Villa 1-3 Raynes Park Vale, Hartley Wintney 5-2 Metropolitan Police, South Park 1-2 Leatherhead, Southall 3-1 Badshot Lea, Sutton Common Rovers 1-2 Uxbridge, Thatcham Town 2-0 Ashford Town, Westfield 0-0 Chertsey Town.
