Guernsey ended their miserable losing run in an exciting clash with Binfield at Footes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

The Green Lions could have done with the three points to all but confirm their safety, but it was just as important not to lose, and Sam Murray ensured that was not the case with his second-half equaliser after the Sarnians had squandered an early two-goal lead to fall behind soon after the break.

Aside from an early chance for Manuchim Oke-William, when he got the ball caught under his feet and dragged wide when one-on-one with Josh Addison, the hosts started with the purpose their situation demanded and their efforts brought about not one, but two quick-fire goals around the quarter hour mark.

As Addison’s high ball forward was flicked on by Murray, and it fell perfectly for Matt Loaring to run onto it and lift the ball over the stranded Killian Barrett into an empty net – his 16th goal seeing him matches his best-ever scoring season achieved in 2012-13.

Just three minutes later, Dave Merris delivered low from the left and Ross Allen took advantage of a defensive slip, seizing upon the scuffed clearance and lifting the ball high into the net.

It should have been three and almost game over just two minutes after that, but Barrett saved with his legs to deny Loaring a second after the Guernseyman had worked space for himself at the far post.

Having been let off, the Moles began to claw their way into the game. Mitchell Parker’s curler was grabbed from under the crossbar by Addison, who also held a header flicked on from a long throw. Luke Wayborn then met a header at the far post but it was cleared off the line.

The visitors’ improvement earned its reward on the half-hour as Tyler D’Cruz turned home a rebound from close range following a long-throw, which Tony Vance remonstrated with the linesman had seen the thrower step over the touch line as he lobbed the ball in.

Parker was Binfield’s dangerman, and he had Addison worried with a free-kick that bounced off the top of the bar, and the number 10 also drew a save from Addison with a curler from outside the box.

It was a sign of things to come, but the equaliser on 35 minutes was a gift as Merris miscued a back pass and lobbed it over Addison and just inside the post.

GFC should have been straight back in front. Allen was first onto Niall Hainsworth’s ball over the top reached a ball over the top from kick-off but Bennett saved his low shot. The resulting scramble presented another chance for Allen but his rebound was blocked on the line. Binfield couldn’t clear their lines and Allen rounded Bennett to the byline and dinked the ball back into the middle. Murray met it almost on the line but was always stretching to get over it and the ball looped agonisingly over.

The visitors would still have a say before the end of the half and Addison reacted well to turn over after Oke-William and broken through on the right of the box, with D’Cruz heading the resultant corner wide. Connor Holland also had a drive deflected over and Tone Glenn Kusel-Gabriel skewed over after cutting across the box.

A frustrating end to the half after such a positive start, Guernsey were then asleep for the first few minutes after the break and saw their two-goal lead turned into a one-goal deficit as D’Cruz’s had a simple header from six yards to makes it 3-2 in Binfield’s favour.

But luckily the Green Lions reacted well to falling behind and remaining vulnerable when the Moles went forward made for an exciting second half.

Seb Vance’s rising drive was claimed by Bennett, while Murray was denied by a defender on the line as he tried to turn in a downward header from a corner.

Murray wasn’t to be denied a third time and rose at the far post to head home Dave Merris’ cross just before the hour to level proceedings again.

Both teams would have promising openings to win the game in the final half-hour. Charlton Gauvain headed off the line to keep out a flick on from a long throw before GFC put the pressure back on.

Allen had Guernsey’s best chance of all as Matt Loaring put him through down the left channel. The number 10 advanced into the area where his is normally so deadly, but instead blazed over with his left foot.

Substitute Jacques Cauvin drove down the left and cut in to the edge of the area but Barrett gathered his low shot. Gauvain then followed suit from Loaring’s tee-up but Barrett got down to spoon it wide. Loaring then work himself space on the edge of the box with some neat footwork but lifted over.

Addison showed safe hands to hold a Parker free-kick and D’Cruz header, while Owen Wallbridge missed the chance to be super-sub as he was only able to hook over his shoulder straight at Barrett after great work by Gauvain down the left.

One more win should just about be enough for Guernsey, with Southall the visitors on Wednesday. It will certainly be enough if Binfield fail to beat Corinthian-Casuals on Tuesday.

Saturday’s other results were as follows: Ashford Town 2-0 Corinthian-Casuals, Badshot Lea 0-1 Sutton Common Rovers, Chertsey Town 3-1 Ascot United (CHERTSEY ARE CHAMPIONS), Chipstead 0-0 Hanworth Villa, Marlow 1-2 Westfield, Metropolitan Police 0-1 Thatcham Town, Northwood 0-3 South Park, Raynes Park Vale 1-1 Hartley Wintney, Uxbridge 2-3 Southall.
