Guernsey were sickened by yet another late collapse as they let a three-goal half-time lead slip at Ascot United on Saturday.
On paper it is a positive point that the team would probably have accepted before the game, and it does move the Green Lions up a place in the table, but leading by three with just 15 minutes plus injury time to play, it was another result that slipped away. The Sarnians have dropped 12 points thanks to late goals this season.
To the hosts’ credit, they hit GFC with a second-half onslaught and clawed two back to set up a dramatic final 15 minutes or so, and it was virtually the last kick of the game again that saw the visitors’ hopes of a win dashed.
Matt Loaring headed home two set pieces in the first half, both from Charlton Gauvain deliveries – one a free-kick and the other a corner – and Ross Allen capitalised on a loose pass to chip Guernsey into a 2-0 lead just a minute after they had broken the deadlock after the 10-minute mark.
Owen Wallbridge was denied a certain goal by Ollie Lahtinen-Kalsi before being forced off early with injury and Allen saw an distance effort flash just wide.
But one-way traffic in the second half eventually took its toll despite Guernsey defending for their lives. Chad Goulter rattled the post early in the second half and Harry Grant found the net only to be denied by the offisde flag. Gauvain nearly provided some respite from range but Ascot keeper Mark Scott plucked it out the top corner.
The goal that sparked the comeback was a stunner, with substitute Ben Harris slamming home a bicycle kick with just over 15 minutes left. Five minutes later, the Yellas set up a granstand finish as Harris made it 3-2 despite protests of offside from GFC, tapping in at the far post after a well-worked move.
It was like the Alamo in injury time as Ascot threw absolutely everything they had at Guernsey. Fin Du Port made a brilliant block on the line and it looked like the Green Lions would finally hold onto a lead.
But once again they were undone. The four minutes of added time had already passed when another corner was delivered into the box and after a scramble that also involved Ascot keeper Scott, Khalid Simmo poked over the line to snatch a point. It was the end of Ascot’s seven-match winning run but it felt like another victory for them.
Saturday’s other Isthmian South Central results were as follows: Badshot Lea 2-3 Harrow Borough, Hartley Wintney 4-0 Moneyfields, Hayes & Yeading United 2-1 Ashford Town, South Park (Reigate) 1-6 Farnham Town, Southall 5-1 Hanworth Villa, Sutton Common Rovers 1-0 Leatherhead, Uxbridge 8-0 Horndean, Westfield 2-2 Raynes Park Vale.
