Guernsey FC Women made it five wins from five to extend their lead at the top of the Jersey Women’s Combination to six points on Sunday after seeing off a fightback from St Peter.

The Green Lionesses had to whether a mini storm as the hosts cut their 3-0 half-time advantage back to 3-2 with a quickfire double just before the hour, but Anna Gauvain’s side held firm and regained control of the game before putting the result out of site with three more goals in the final quarter of the game.

After a promising start, Calleigh Hedley motored down the left from almost the halfway line into the box and drove home a powerful finish at the near post to give Guernsey a half-hour lead, which she extended herself shorlty before the break. Adrienne Leech had been denied twice, the first of which had forced a corner. Her second from range was tipped onto the crossbar by a brilliant save but Hedley was well-placed to tap in the rebound from six yards.

Captain Candice Bougourd made it three just afer the restart, sneaking in a second effort from a recycled ball after her first effort had cracked off the bar. 

But Guernsey would have to endure a rocky spell. Lucinda Overbury sparked it as her speculative lob from the edge of the box dropped just under the bar, just out of Emma Queripel’s reach. Just a minute later, Kenneally slid in and caught the ankles of Jennifer Cullen as she drove into the box, with Soraya Da Conceicao dispatching the resulting penalty confidently for 3-2.

After a nervy 10 minutes, Guernsey restored a two-goal cushion as Elise Le Lacheur, with help from Hedley, battled to win the ball back in the area and managed to pick out the far corner from a seemingly impossible angle.

The points were safe with just over 10 minutes to go after a battle for possession around the edge of the St Peter box. Substitute Gracia van Zutphen’s effort may have taken a big deflection to wrongfoot the keeper, but her initial stab at goal looked like it might have been creeping into the far corner, and so she was awarded her second goal for the club.

Hedley pounced on an underhit backpass to round the keeper and finish into an empty net for her third hat-trick in as many games to complete the scoring and cap another fine afternoon for the Green Lionesses.

The teams below them have games in hand, but Guernsey are in the strongest position they possibly could have achieved heading into the Christmas break. Gauvain’s team head back to Jersey in January for another double header with Jersey Wanderers and Sports Club of Jersey.
