Guernsey FC Women have tasted defeat in the league for the first time as a strong Farnham Town side made it six for six in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South.

There is no doubt the visitors were the better side, but a four-goal deficit was perhaps a little harsh, although the Green Lionesses didn’t help themselves with a couple of gifts, which saw them facing an uphill struggle having fallen three behind within 15 minutes.

The first came from Emily Foss on seven minutes after Vicki Rang and Rochelle Mullen had got in each other’s way in the middle of the pitch, enabling Farnham to seize on a loose ball. It was quickly played in behind for Foss to run through and finish low into the far corner.

It was two just two minutes later as a cross came in from the left and Miya Adams ghosted in unmarked to knock the ball in from six yards.

The third on 14 minutes was another gift, as Jess Frampton’s poor attacking free-kick was played straight to a Farnham defender, and a quick ball forward saw Adams run in behind to slot past Alana Hockey.

It could have been four on 18 minutes as Iesha Swaby, whose hold up play was impressive all game, cushioned a ball down for a team mate and spun in behind for the first-time return ball, but the flag went up as the ball hit the back of the net.

Frampton had Guernsey’s first sight of goal from a free-kick that flew narrowly wide, while Hockey was at full stretch to tip over as Foss took aim from outside the D.

Calleigh Hedley nearly benefitted from miscommunication between defender and goalkeeper in the Farnham backline, but her effort from the edge of the area, rolled the wrong side of the post.

The Greens’ start to the second half was much stronger and they were back in the contest inside five minutes as Hedley let Frampton’s throw bounce for Scarlett Kenneally, who let fly on the volley as the ball bounced up and sent it over Mia Francis-Pownall into the corner from all of 30 yards.

Unfortunately, the visitors were able to restore their three-goal cushion just five minutes later as GFC didn’t clear a cross that came in from the left and Rachel Manley collected on the edge of the area before sending a low shot zipping into the bottom corner.

Frampton missed a good chance to reduce it again just two minutes later has Hedley blocked a clearance, but she skewed wide as she broke into the area.

Hedley then drove forward towards the edge of the area and was able to get a shot off under pressure, but Francis-Pownall stuck out a leg to block it.

Guernsey got another goal their second half endeavour deserved on 87 minutes as Rochelle Mullen met Donna Gallienne’s corner and nodded home via a deflection.

But Farnham had more salt to rub into the wound as captain Francesca Thornton drove a sixth into the corner from the edge of the box.
