Guernsey FC Women suffered defeat to Bursledon at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Green Lionesses had a lot of the ball in their visitors’ half, especially early on, but lacked a spark in the final third and didn’t really trouble the Bursledon defence. The away side led 2-0 at half-time with more or less their only two chances of the half.

Codie Le Flem’s brilliant strike halved the deficit in the closing stages but any chance of a comeback were snuffed out immediately as GFC gifted Bursledon their two-goal lead back, which they added to late on.

With Guernsey struggling to penetrate the away defence in the first half, it looked like set pieces would be the way forward. Rochelle Mullen’s free-kick was one of these, but it was straight at Sian Lodge, who held.

It was a counter attack that led to Bursledon taking the lead, with the ball eventually played to Izzi Pouncy, who found the bottom corner from just inside the area. The second came on 39 minutes as a corner was knocked back into the six-yard box and Pouncy had a tap-in from close range.

Rosina Folkes hit the bar early in the second half as she looked to increase her side’s lead. Heidi Dawber, moved to centre-forward after the break as Anna Gauvain looked to shake things up, responded in kind with an effort that had Lodge beaten, but the ball bounced away off the frame of the goal. Alana Hockey also rushed out of her goal to make a brilliant block to deny Folkes one-on-one.

Le Flem’s goal to get the Greens back into the game was a beauty, collecting the ball on the edge of the D and caught out Lodge with a brilliant lob.

But that unfortunately did not spark a comeback as the Lionsesses killed their own momentum within three minutes, with a careless mix-up at the back presenting a gift of a tap-in virtually on the line for Pouncy to complete her hat-trick.

Charlet Norman-Tasker fully put the game to bed with five minutes to go as she tried her luck from distance, with her high lob out of reach of Hockey.

Guernsey remain sixth in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South with Sunday’s other results as follows: Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-3 Wimborne Town, Shaftesbury 3-4 AFC Varsity.
