Charlton Gauvain’s first goal of the season saw Guernsey edge through to to the next round of the FA Vase in the sweltering heat at Newhaven on Saturday afternoon.
The man currently wearing the captain’s armband for the Green Lions tucked away a finish from a tight angle early on and after a strong first half and start of the second, the Sarnians had to dig deeper as the game wore on to book a home tie in September.
Just a minute after he had fired a good chance straight at Fraser Trigwell, Gauvain collected a George Goubert pass and bundled through the back line, evading the outstretched dive of Trigwell and stayed on his feet to squeeze the ball in from the tightest of angles, out of reached of two retreating defenders on the line.
Gauvain was unable to double the lead on 25 minutes as his header failed to test Trigwell, while Josh Addison made a strong save to preserve his side’s advantage, one of a couple of important stops before half-time on route to his 25th clean sheet for the club.
Both Sam Murray and Gauvain came close to opening up a gap early in the second half, but Trigwell was equal to Murray’s effort and Gauvain’s chance was cleared off the line.
Addison saved well from a home free-kick with 10 minutes left and despite heavy pressure from the Dockers, Tony Vance’s side held firm as they did in their recent trip to East Grinstead Town, and have set up a tie with either Roffey or Hollands and Blair in the second qualifying round at Victoria Park on 12th September.
