GFC Dev progress to final despite defeat

Guernsey FC Development were beaten 5-2 by St Martin’s in the Spirit Cup, but the two sides will meet again to contest the final at Victoria Park next week.

Saints led 1-0 at the break but Fin Patterson equalised just before the hour, bagging again on 78 minutes to halve the deficit after Leon Meakin’s side had gone 3-1 down. Two very late goals from Saints put more gloss on the scoreline for them.

Saints remain the bogey side for GFC Dev, having won all encounters between the two so far.

With Aston Young and Owen Tardif, sons of former GFC players Craig and Chris, having already featured for the Development side, there was another nice family moment as Freddie Cochrane – son of former club captain and first player to ever sign for the Green Lions, Sam Cochrane – made his first appearance in a GFC shirt off the bench.

With GFC Dev awarded a walkover against Sylvans, it leaves them on six points to Saints’ nine, making them the top two in the group. They will face each other in the final on Wednesday 5th August with a 7.30pm kick-off.

GFC DEVELOPMENT: Luke ELMY; Oskar CLEAL; Sam COOLEY; Angus MACKAY; Seb MOURANT; Ryan-Zico BLACK; Aston YOUNG; Alfie TORODE; Tito GUIMARAES; Marc McGRATH; Dylan GRAHAM. Subs used: Freddie COCHRANE; Pearce LE POIDEVIN; Rufus BOUSFIELD; Jake MARTIN; Owen TARDIF; Fin PATTERSON.

Goals: Patterson 2.
