Sam Murray and Fin du Port bagged late in each half to get Guernsey back to winning ways at Lancing on Saturday.
Jordan Kelly also made fantastics saves either side of the break to keep the Green Lions in front before du Port’s super strike on his 50th appearance made the points safe.
While they perhaps didn’t make the absolute most of playing against 10 men for much of the game, it was important to get back to winning ways after a disappointing home defeat the previous weekend. Tony Vance’s side were also not at 100% with reports on illness in the camp in the week, not to mention numerous injuries.
Guernsey started on the front foot and Will Fazakerley was denied in a goalmouth scramble within minutes, although Jordan Kelly also made a good save to deny Isaac Brown.
Will Tillman had to push behind to keep out a Guernsey dangerous free-kick, while du Port fired narrowly wide.
The Sarnians’ task was made a little easier around the half hour mark when Lacheur’s long ball towards Murray was handballed by Belal Ouachan, denying a goalscoring opportunity. He was given his marching orders.
Ross Allen teed up Charlton Gauvain who narrowly missed the target, while Jacob Fallaize made a vital tackle to stop Ellis Collier as he bore down on Kelly.
The visitors took the lead five minutes before half time as Gauvain clipped a ball towards the far post. The attempted clearance by the Lancing defender went straight up in the air and Murray watched it it drop before unleashing an overhead kick that send the ball past Tillman.
It could have been two shortly after but Murray’s effort was cleared off the line and Allen’s follow-up was deflected wide. But the Green Lions had Kelly to thank for keeping them in front at the interval as James Rhodes played Frankie Spiteri in behind but Kelly was out quickly to turn the ball away with this legs.
The hosts were brave after the break, going at GFC despite the man disadvantage. Collier had a couple more good chances before the hour but was just wide with the first and brought another fine save from Kelly with the second.
But Guernsey regrouped with Murray playing in strike partner Fazakerley but he dragged his effort wide.
Du Port made the game safe with a minute to go as Gauvain picked him out on the edge of the box. Du Port shifted onto his right foot and let fly with a piledriver that flew out of reach of Tillman’s dive into the corner.
Another midweek trip for the injury hit Green Lions to Shoreham awaits on Tuesday before a break from league action for the first round of the FA Vase.
Guernsey are up to sixth in a cramped top half of the table, joining two other clubs on 21 points. Saturday’s other Southern Combination Premier Division results were as follows: AFC Varndeanians 0-5 Crawley Down Gatwick, Haywards Heath Town 1-0 Eastbourne United, Horsham YM 1-2 Newhaven, Midhurst & Easebourne 1-2 Little Common, Pagham 1-0 Bexhill United, Roffey 0-2 Peaceheaven & Telscombe, Shoreham 3-4 Lingfield, Steyning Town 5-0 Seaford Town, Wick 0-4 Forest Row.
