Green Lions mission is clear while Lionesses also close out campaign

There is a Guernsey double header to end the season on Saturday as the men’s side head to Harrow Borough knowing they must grab another win for a chance of staying up, while the women’s side host Sports Club of Jersey at Victoria Park.

Tony Vance’s Green Lions not only require a win, but also need Metropolitan Police to lose to Sutton Common Rovers (a draw won’t be good enough because of Met Police’s vastly superior goal difference). That is not a prospect GFC can bank on as Sutton Common are already relegated and unlikely to be keen to do us a favour, so the Sarnians must just focus on themselves and their result, then just wait and see what happens elsewhere.

A third consecutive away clean sheet would be a good platform to build on and if they manage it, it will be Guernsey’s 100th shut-out. Charlton Gauvain is set to match Angus Mackay on 180 appearances for the club, while the Sarnians need two goals to rack up 1,000 in league competition (including a play-off semi-final).

It is unlikely that Ben Acey will be helping the squad out again as he will be back with Farnborough if he recovers from the knock that forced him off on Thursday.

The Green Lions have picked up 11 points from six games to give themselves an outside chances of survival. It is our first visit to Harrow Borough, for whom this game is a dead rubber. They will finish either 13th with a point or 14th if they lose and Southall beaten Ashford Town with a big enough margin. The Boro fell well away from a play-off chase with just one win in 12 league games since mid-February and they have dropped points to Badshot Lea, South Park (twice) and Met Police in that time.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 3pm. Broadcasting rules means we cannot stream the game live but fans not making the trip to the Earlsmead Stadium can listen to live commentary on our @GuernseyFC X Space. There will be a full match report on the website.

JFA Women’s Combination Champions Guernsey FC Women kick off half an hour before the Green Lions, meaning fans at Victoria Park will likely be keeping a keen eye on the Isthmian South Central scores in the UK and maybe hang around for half an hour to celebrate or commiserate.

Anna Gauvain is using the game, against the league’s bottom side, to give minutes to a few players who have been more on the fringes this season, which means an afternoon off for the likes of Codie Le Flem, Calleigh Hedley, Donna Gallienne, Adrienne Leech, Chloe Ingrouille, Scarlett Kenneally, Scarlett Gallagher, Emma Queripel and captain Candice Bougourd.

There could be two potential debuts with Shan Whelan and Joanna Wheatley selected for the first time.

The Green Lionsesses can confirm an unbeaten league campaign if they avoid defeat and need three goals to rack up 70 in just 12 league games this season.

The Green Lionesses kick off at 2.30pm. Fans unable to make it to Victoria Park can keep up to date with our social media posts, followed by a full match report on the website.
