Green Lions renew a decade-old rivalry

Guernsey renew a rivalry with old foes for the first time in nearly nine years when they visit the Bedfont Recreation Ground on Wednesday evening.

The Green Lions played Bedfont Sports four times in their first two seasons in existence as the pair both earned promotion from the Combined Counties League Division One in 2012 (GFC beat the Eagles 7-1 at Footes Lane in March 2012 to confirm the title), then did battle again in the Premier Division the following season, with Tony Vance’s side eventually earning promotion and the Heathrow Airport neighbours finishing 13th. They eventually earned promotion in 2018 and have been in the Isthmian League ever since.

They reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup this season, their best ever performance, and have won four and drawn two of their league games since the turn of the year.

The Sarnians have won all four clashes between the pair so far, bagging 17 goals in the process, but their league positions are somewhat different this year with Bedfont in seventh and eyeing a chase for a play-off place. They would leapfrog Marlow into sixth with a win tonight.

The Green Lions have seven points from nine away from home after clocking up the airmiles last week. A win wouldn’t push them any further up the table tonight, but it would put them in a position whereby they could to shoot into midtable by beating Chipstead on Saturday.

Wednesday’s game at the Bedfont Recreational Ground kicks off at 7.45pm. Fans back in Guernsey can catch the action live on GFCTV, and are encouraged to gather at ‘Le Lion Vert’ at the Guernsey Hockey Club at Footes Lane to watch it together. As a courtesy, we would appreciate if you could take an LFT test before coming along. Highlights and a full match report will follow on the website.
