Green Lions win would avoid unwanted new record

Guernsey’s quest for a much-needed win to strengthen their survival battle continues with the visit of Uxbridge on Wednesday night.

The Green Lions are already on a new record run of home games without a win (12, having surpassed the 10 set from January to April 2017), but there were some draws in that run. They are currently on a five-game losing streak at Footes Lane, equalling the run set in the first two months of 2017, and so need to avoid defeat at the very least this evening to avoid setting a new record of straight home losses.

The Green Lions can’t exit the relegation zone even with a win this evening, but they can position themselves handily behind the pack just above them, rather than being cut adrift.

Ross Allen is expected to return after missing the trip to Rayners Lane at the weekend, but Jamie Dodd and Kieran Mahon are still recovering from injuries. A strong performance by those in the starting line-up and off the bench on Saturday gives Tony Vance a selection headache.

There is also frustration for the Sarnians to address after two late defeats in their last two games, to Binfield and Rayners Lane. It won’t be easy as they come up against an Uxbridge side that has found form after a difficult start, winning their last four in the league and seven overall. They are targetting a 10th straight unbeaten game and are also the only side in the division to have reached the first round proper of the FA Trophy.

They were beaten 3-0 on their last visit to Footes Lane, last November, a game in which Owen Wallbridge scored his first for the club. But they won the reverse fixtures 2-0 against a young Green Lions side depleted by selection for the Muratti semi-final.

Wednesday night’s game kicks off at 7.45pm. Fans unable to make it to Footes Lane can follow the updates on our social media channels, or listen to full live commentary on our @GuernseyFC X Space.
