Guernsey look to continue good form at Northwood

Guernsey take on a very different Northwood to the one they beat back in October when they make their second visit to the Fenton Civil Engineering Stadium on Saturday.

Just one player from the squad that lost to goals from Charlton Gauvain and Ross Allen that day was involved in The Woods’ latest outing, a 2-1 victory over Chalfont St Peter on Tuesday.

After just one win and one draw in their opening 12 Isthmian South Central games, they changed their manager, brought in a director of football and increased their playing budget, and have since won eight of the next dozen, including wins over play-off hopefuls Chertsey Town, Uxbridge, Basingstoke Town and Marlow.

That places them 11th in the table, but the Green Lions go into the game buoyed by scoring 10 times in two games as they recorded back to back victories to move clear of the bottom three. We cannot climb higher up the table this weekend but can make up ground on the teams in above with several games in hand still to come.

Liam Mahon is hoping for a return to the squad having missed the last couple of games.

Our last visit to the Middlesex side was in the FA Trophy in November 2014, when they were knocked out on penalties in the first qualifying round. Marc McGrath’s strike cancelled out the hosts opener with the game eventually going into extra time. Both sides scored again, with Heaume bagging for the Green Lions, but The Wood converted all five of their spotkicks, with Luke Winch missing for Guernsey after McGrath, Heaume and Alex Le Prevost had all scored.

Saturday’s match at the Fenton Civil Engineering Stadium kicks off at 12.45pm. Fans back in Guernsey can watch full live coverage on GFCTV. Highlights and a full match report will be on the website afterwards. Please note that the Hockey Club will not be showing the game this weekend.
