Huge test could be run-in definer

Guernsey go into Saturday’s game against Haywards Heath Town knowing that the result will likely define how the Green Lions view their end-of-season run-in.

Now the Bluebells have caught up on games, we know how the land lies. The gap is eight points with 11 games today. Win and claw the gap back to five points and the Sarnians can consider themselves in contention for the title race. Draw or lose and realistically, top spot is out of reach and GFC will need to focus on securing their play-off spot.

It about 9pm on Tuesday night, the prospect looked even more promising with Haywards Heath trailing Pagham in their final game in hand. But they equalised in the final five minutes and then, with Pagham’s goalkeeper sent off, bagged a winner deep into injury time, preventing a run of three straight defeats having lost against Peacehaven & Telscombe and Bexhill United in their previous two.

Seb Vance, Matt Loaring and Fin du Port are all on the injury list, although the first two are nearing a return and the latter’s ankle injury is hopefully not as bad as first feared. Will Fazakerley is searching for a 30th goal that would take him clear of Craig Young in the all-time goalscorers list.

Guernsey are also looking to shake off a disappointing performance and defeat to Horsham YM last weekend that dented their hopes of catching the top two, as well as seeking retribution for a 6-1 defeat at Haywards Heath back in November (Fin Patterson scored our consolation). But their overall form remains strong with two wins in their last 14 matches. That Horsham defeat means they and Peacehaven & Telscombe are now just a point behind but the teams in the play-offs have a comfortable cushion over the chasing pack.

Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans unable to make it to Victoria Park can listen to full live commentary on Facebook Live or on our @GuernseyFC X Space, or keep up to date with our social media posts.

It’s another double-header weekend at Victoria Park. Having ended a seven-game winless run last time out win a victory over Shaftesbury, the Green Lionesses have a chance to start rebuilding momentum as they meet second-bottom AFC Varsity for the first time on Sunday.

Holidays, sickness and injuries means Anna Gauvain doesn’t quite have as many resources at her disposal as she would like but still has a strong core squad available. Goalkeeper Emma Queripel, who has been injured since the 2025 Muratti last May, is back in the squad for the first time to challenge Alana Hockey for a place. Coach Katie Robert retired from playing at the end of last season, scoring in her final game, has been registered as extra cover on the bench. Captain Candice Bougourd is set to make her 30th appearance for the club, only the fourth player to reach that milestone for the women’s team.

The full squad is as follows: Alana Hockey, Emma Queripel, Scarlett Kenneally, Aimee Ogier, Steph Batiste, Mollie Watson, Kellie Creed, Candice Bougourd, Donna Gallienne, Katie Robert, Eleanor Jamieson, Heidi Dawber, Adrienne Leech, Codie Le Flem, Ruby Smith.

The table is still congested and with a full set of fixtures scheduled for Sunday, GFCW could end the weekend anywhere between fourth and ninth.

Sunday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans unable to make it to Victoria Park can keep up to date with our social media posts. We will advise ahead of kick-off if there will be live commentary.

A full match report will follow both games.
