Lionesses battle for useful point

HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE00GUERNSEY FC WOMEN

Guernsey FC Women fought hard in a stalemate at Havant & Waterlooville to start the new year positively and end their losing run.

Both sides cancelled each other out in a game of few chances. Alana Hockey made a couple of important stops in the first half as the hosts nearly got in behind.

Scarlett Kenneally made a brilliant tackle to deny Amelia Filson opening the scoring just after half-time, while the Green Lionesses’ best chance came from Cody Le Flem soon after. Her half-volley from Ruby Smith’s knockdown was well saved by Sara Luce. Smith was making her full debut after six previous appearances off the bench.

It was also positive to see Scarlett Gallagher back in the squad. She has been training with the team while back from university for the Christmas holiday. Hockey also earned her second clean sheet, which was achieved without key defenders Aimee Ogier and Vicki Rang, who were unavailable to travel. There were also several other key players missing from the squad such as Calleigh Hedley, Adrienne Leech, Elise Le Lacheur and Rochelle Mullen.

It’s only the second time ever that GFC Women have failed to score a goal, and was their first ever 0-0.

The point took Anna Guavain’s side up one place in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South and sets them up nicely for two winnable home games to come in January.

Sunday’s other results were as follows: Burlesdon 4-2 Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Farnham Town 2-0 Wimborne Town, Shaftesbury 2-1 Andover New Street.
