Guernsey FC Women picked up their first point of the season in testing circumstance at Bournemouth Sports Reserves on Sunday afternoon.
On paper, it looks disappointing to not have held on for the win against a side who have lost their opening two league games, but the Green Lionesses had to play out the closing stages with 10 players after a Calleigh Hedley was dismissed and battled to hold onto the result.
It was the Greens leading scorer Hedley who had opened the scoring just six minutes in, latching onto Candice Bougourd’s hook forward and driving her shot powerfully past the home keeper. It was a strong first-half showing overall, with the Sarnians forcing a number of set pieces and half chances but couldn’t quite add to their tally.
It was a lob from distance by Laina Warren that brought the scores level midway through the second half, although Hedley almost put her side back in front immediately afterwards. Aimee Ogier had received a questionable sinbin ahead of the goal which meant the Greens were a player short.
Hedley was sgiven her marching orders for a second bookable offence as she was heading off the pitch to be substituted, leaving Anna Gauvain’s side short for the closing stages.
This gave Bournemouth Sports impetus to try and win the game, but some brave last-ditch defending from the Lionesses, including two big punches under pressure from goalkeeper Emma Queripel ensured they have something to bring home on the flight back.
Sunday’s only other league game saw Whitchurch United and Bursledon draw 3-3.
