Guernsey FC Women were narrowly beaten by a first-half goal at AFC Varsity on Sunday afternoon.
Following a switch of venue and a later kick-off to make sure the game could go ahead, the Green Lionesses battled hard but struggled to make a breakthrough in attack, and they found themselves behind less than five minutes before the break as the Varsity number 25 pinched the ball off Scarlett Kenneally and played it across the box, where it bounced into the path of the number 11 for find the far corner.
Emma Queripel made a number of excellent saves in the second half to keep her side in it, while Anna Gauvain’s side also found another gear but could make the breakthrough as they became more direct late on.
Donna Gallienne almost stole a point with a long-range effort in the last minute but it was saved by the home goalkeeper.
Defender Aimee Ogier became the fifth player to reach 40 appearances for the Lionesses.
The result leaves the Sarnians 10th in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South table and they face 11th-placed Whitchurch United next Sunday.
