Guernsey are looking to put their Christmas weekend hangover behind them in their return fixture with AFC Varndeanians at Victoria Park on Saturday, kicking off a series of four home games out of five in January.
Sam Murray needs one more goal to edge past Marc McGrath into clear fifth in the all-time scorers lists. In his current form (he has an astounding 12 goals in six games), you wouldn’t bet against it.
Tony Vance will want to see a reaction to a poor performance at Forest Row on Saturday that saw them concede six goals for the third time this season.
The Sarnians could move back up to third with a win. There are a few absentees with Tom Vaudin, Jacques Cauvin, Simon Arnold, Niall Hainsworth, Seb Vance and Matt Loaring all still sidelined, while Brandon Wallace, Tom Dodds and Ben Solway are unavailable. That means teenagers Gil Hunter and George Goubert are likely to keep their places in the squad, while there could be a return to Tyrese Kelly, who got injured soon after his debut in September.
The Vs were rooted to the bottom of the table but have rallied and drew three in a row before picking up a win against fellow strugglers Shoreham to put them within touching distance of safety. By contrast, GFC’s were on a five-game winning streak before last weekend’s heavy defeat. The Green Lions ground out a 1-0 win away from home back in August, with Charlton Gauvain netting the clincher late on.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans unable to make it to Victoria Park can listen to full live commentary on our Facebook page and our @GuernseyFC X Space, as well as keep up to dates with our usual social media posts. A full match report will follow on the website.
