Lions trying to get over the line, Lionesses close curtain on campaign

Guernsey’s bid to secure third place in the Southern Combination Premier Division has rolled on another weekend and they will hope to confirm it as they visit Pagham on Saturday.

Two defeats in a row mean the Green Lions are somewhat stumbling towards the finish line but they have been severely hampered by injuries and Muratti call-ups.

Either three points for GFC, or a point if Horsham YM and Peacehaven & Telscombe fail to win their respective games against Bexhill United and Steyning Town, who hope to secure the title, will be enough.

There will be revenge on the mind, too, as Pagham inflicted a 4-2 defeat on the Tony Vance’s side at Victoria Park in October (thanks to three late goals after Charlton Gauvain and Will Fazakerley had given the Greens the advantage).

There is still a lengthy injury list while Fin Patterson, Gil Hunter, Alfie Torode, Riley Tyrrell, Dylan Graham and Tyrese Kelly are all unavailable due to their involvement in the U18 Muratti in Jersey on Sunday. George Goubert and Dave Merris are available again.

Tom Dodds is set to move past Dominic Heaume into clear fifth in the club’s all-time appearance list with his 271st outing. The win needed to secure third would also be GFC’s 250th, as well as a 30th victory this year in all competitions. Guernsey are the only club in the league to not have drawn a single games this season.

Pagham are in decent form themselves with four wins in six, but a defeat to Crawley Down Gatwick recently ended any hopes they had of sneaking into the play-offs. They are in a three-way battle for sixth place with Eastbourne United and Newhaven (all three are on 66 points) but having no pressure means they can play with freedom.

Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans not making the journey to Nyetimber Lane can watch the first half live on our YouTube channel and listen to the full 90-minutes’ commentary on our @GuernseyFC X Space. We will also have our usual social media updates.

Guernsey FC Women bring down the curtain on what they can consider a very promising and productive first season in the UK league system on Sunday as they head to AFC Varsity.

They do so with a strong squad thanks to several players returning from injury including Elise Le Lacheur and Amy Dallamore, while Ruby Smith has shaken off the knock she suffered in the recent late defeat to Wimborne Town and Rochelle Mullen is available to travel. Scarlett Gallagher is back at university and so will not feature.

Scarlett Kenneally and Donna Gallienne’s inclusion means they will have featured in every game this season.

The Green Lionesses could still finish anywhere between sixth and 10th in the Southern Region Women’s Division One South but victory on Sunday would remove any hopes of their opponents overhauling them. They are looking for a third win in four games.

The full travelling squad is as follows: Emma Queripel, Aimee Ogier, Scarlett Kenneally, Mollie Watson, Kellie Creed, Jess Frampton, Candice Bougourd, Rochelle Mullen, Emily McCartney, Donna Gallienne, Amy Dallamore, Elise Le Lacheur, Heidi Dawber, Adrienne Leech, Codie Le Flem, Ruby Smith.

AFC Varsity are ninth with two games to play but haven’t won in their last three league games. They won the reverse fixture at Victoria park 4-1 in March.

Sunday’s match kicks off at 2pm. Fans not making the journey to Hatches Farm Sports Ground in Romsey can watch the full game live on our YouTube channel or keep up to date with our social media posts.

A full match report will follow both games.
